The
Cerritos College women's track and field
team showed just how strong and deep they
are during their South Coast Conference
five-way meet on Friday. The Falcons posted
wins over Mt. San Antonio College
(219.5-196.5), El Camino College
(219.5-145), Los Angeles Southwest College
(219.5-20) and Pasadena City College
(219.5-10) to improve their conference
record to 4-0, while they are now 6-0 in
dual meets. Cerritos will finish off their
conference dual meet season on Friday when
they travel to Long Beach City College.
Over the
course of the meet, the Falcons picked up
seven first place finishes in the running
events, including both relay races, while
they also won two of the field events and
came in second place in four others.
Freshman
sprinter
Sade Williams (Long Beach
Poly HS) captured both the 100 meters
(12.30) and 200 meters (24.70), while she
also ran a leg of both winning relay teams.
In the 400-meter relay, the quartet of
freshman
Brittany Stewart (Cypress
HS), sophomore
Yasmin Webb
(Buena Park HS), freshman
Jessica Barfield (Lynwood HS)
and Williams turned in a time of 48.77,
while freshman
Apryll White
(Kennedy HS), Williams, Webb and
sophomore
Patrice
Fernandes (Loara
HS/Santa Ana College) won the race with
a time of 3:59.94.
All of the
participants in the relay race also had an
impact on the team's outcome, as Webb won
the 400 meters in a time of 58.85, while
Fernandes won the 400-meter hurdles
(1:06.26), with White (1:08.18) placing
second in that race and in the high jump
with a height of 4' 10". As for Stewart, she
came in third place in the 100 meters
(12.91) and in the long jump (15' 5"0), with
Barfield placing second in the javelin at
104' 4".
Others who
won events for the Falcons included freshman
Shannon Simpson (Fountain
Valley HS) in the 2-mile race
(12:03.11), while sophomore
Jarvina
McClain (El Rancho HS)
picked up a first place finish in the discus
(128' 3) and sophomore
NaShawnda
Grant (Santa Fe HS)
won the javelin with a throw of 104' 8".
There were
other outstanding performances for the
Falcons, with freshman
Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe HS)
coming in third place in both the 800 meters
and 1-mile race; freshman
Erin Straughter (Valencia
HS) placing second in the 100-meter
hurdles and third in the 400-meter hurdles;
while freshman
Whitney Ashley (J.W.
North HS) came in second in the shot
put and third in the javelin.
