For the second time in three years, the Cerritos College
women's track and field team captured the Southern
California Championship. When the Falcons won that title
in 2006, they went on to capture the state championship.
The team will be in familiar territory next Friday and
Saturday at the state championships, as it will be held
at Falcon Stadium. On Saturday, Cerritos compiled 143.5
team points and was able to pull away from West Los
Angeles College, who came in second place with 127 team
points.
Cerritos rode the strength of their throwers, as 13 of the 16
they had in the Southern California Championships
advanced to the state championships. In addition, the
team also qualified three jumpers and a pole vaulter. In
the running events, five distance runners, two hurdlers
and both relay teams also advanced.
While compiling their team points, the Falcons had three
individual champions, with freshman Jessica Barfield
(Lynwood HS) setting a new school record in the
triple jump with a distance of 39' 9 1/2", which broke
the old record of 39' 3 3/4", set by Antares Vice
in the 2000 state championships. Freshman Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS) also continued to
excel in the javelin with a toss of 128' 10, while
freshman Whitney Ashley (J.W. North HS)
won the discus with a throw of 141' 1".
