After three events
in the California Community College Athletic
Association Women's Track and Field State
Championships, the Cerritos College women's track
and field team is in first place with 31 team
points. The Falcons, who are considered to be the
front-runner for the state title, have compiled 31
team points, and lead second place College of the
Siskiyous, who have 13 team points. The state
championships, which are taking place at Falcon
Stadium, conclude tomorrow with the first event to
begin at noon.
Cerritos scored
points in all three of the events, with freshman
Whitney Ashley (J.W. North HS)
winning the state championship in the discus. She
won the event with a throw of 147' 2", while
sophomore teammate
Jarvina
McClain (El Rancho HS) took
fourth place and collected five team points with a
toss of 131' 9".
In the 10,000
meters, the duo of freshmen
Shannon
Simpson (Fountain Valley HS)
and
Lucy
Beuster (Kennedy HS) placed
third and fourth, respectively, which garnered the
Falcons 11 more team points. Simpson turned in a
time of 40:18.77, while Beuster was right behind at
40:30.16.
The Falcons also
picked up points in the javelin, as freshman
Rachel Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
took sixth place with a toss of 116', while freshman
Karen Guravska (El Dorado HS)
finished in seventh place with a throw that covered
115' 6". Freshman Jessica Barfield
(Lynwood HS) did not score any points, but
did finish in 10th place at 110' 8".
