Now in his third year as the program’s pole vault coach, Steve Lewis has already seen an immediate impact since his arrival. Just last season, pole vaulter Karen Guravska came in fifth place at the state championships, as the women con their second state title in the last three years. In addition, decathlete Cody Lewis placed fourth at the state championships, with the pole vault being one of the events.
    As a track athlete at Long Beach Millikan High, Lewis was a member of three straight Moore League championship teams and was a three-time league decathlon champion. He also ran a leg of the league championship 400-meter relay team and ran a 9.9 100 meters. While at Long Beach City College, Lewis was voted his team’s Most Valuable Player and turned in a long jump of 25’ 5¼”.
    When not coaching, Lewis, 50, likes to go surfing and antique shopping.
