This Week's Sports Schedule

04.04.09 - CERRITOS WINS EIGHT EVENTS AT INVITATIONAL

The Cerritos College women's track and field team made a great first impression at the 1st Annual American River Invitational on Saturday. The Falcons won eight events and came in second place in nine others, as they went up against both community college and four-year university competition. The team will now compete in the prestigious Mt. San Antonio Relays on Saturday.

Heading the list of first place finishers was freshman Marlene Elizalde (St. Paul HS), who set a new school-record in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11.34.88. Her time eclipsed the old record of 11:35.14, set by sophomore teammate Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe HS) earlier in the season. In fact, Muniz placed second in the race with a time of 11:37.07, while sophomore Tawny Vilchis (Long Beach Poly HS) placed third.

Sophomores Jessica Barfield (Lynwood HS) and Karen Guravska (El Dorado HS) each won two field events, as the Falcons picked up six of their first place finishes in the field events. Barfield broke her own school record in winning the triple jump, while she also won the long jump, while Guravska was the winner of the high jump and javelin. Joining Barfield, who posted a leap of 41' 1/4" to break her old mark of 40' 1 1/2" in the triple jump, was sophomore Brandi McCall (Norwalk HS), who came in second place, while Barfield also placed fifth in the 100 meters. In the long jump, Barfield improved on her personal best distance of 19' 1/2". Freshman Arianna Lugo (Los Altos HS) led a group of Falcons in the hammer by coming in first place at 49.41 meters. Sophomore Whitney Ashley (J.W. North HS) placed third at 150' 7", which is the fourth-best throw in school history, with freshman Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (Paramount HS) finishing in fourth place at 45.87 meters. As for Aliimatafitafi, she won the shot put with a throw of 13.05 meters, while Ashley finished in second place.

Sophomore distance runner Lucy Beuster (Kennedy HS) easily beat all other competition in the 5000 meters, turning in a time of 18:53.91, which was 30 second faster than the second place finisher. Freshman teammate Allison Garcia (Sunny Hills HS) did come in third place at 19:52.34. In the 1500 meters, freshman Alison Bartsoch (Squalicum (WA) HS) posted the fourth-fastest time in school history at 4:51.64, which put her in second place in the race. Sophomore Erin Straughter (Valencia HS) turned in a pair of second place finishes, with a 14.96 in the 100-meter hurdles and 1:04.67 in the 400-meter IH.
