The Cerritos
College women's track and field team is the
defending state champion and are currently ranked #1
in the state. At the Mt. San Antonio Relays over the
weekend, they showed how strong they are by winning
four events and placing second in four others. The
Falcons will compete at the Long Beach Relays this
weekend at Cerritos College before they start the
South Coast Conference preliminaries.
Winning events for
the Falcons were sophomore
Karen
Guravska (El Dorado HS) in the
pole vault and javelin, sophomore
Jessica
Barfield (Lynwood HS) in the
long jump and freshman
Arianna Lugo
(Los Altos HS) in the hammer. Guravska won
the pole vault at 11' 6", while toss of 39.29 meters
in the javelin was the best out of four other
Cerritos entries that finished in the top 10.
Sophomore
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
finished third, Barfield was seventh and freshman
Maria Savea (Green Valley HS, NV)
placed 10th. As for Barfield, she won the long jump
at 5.76 meters, while also placing second in the 200
meters (24.96).
In the running
events, freshman
Cyntrail
Pierce (Compton HS) came in
fourth place in the 200 meters (25.18), while
freshman
Marlene
Elizalde (St. Paul HS)
finished sixth in the 800 meters (2:21.86) and 1500
meters (4:49.43). Sophomore
Erin
Straughter (Valencia HS)
turned in a pair of second place finishes in the
100-meter hurdles (14.57) and 400-meter hurdles
(1:04.47), while freshman
Apryll
White (Kennedy HS) was in
fourth place with a time of 1:05.97.
As they have all
season, the Falcons dominated in the field events.
Joining Lugo in the hammer were freshman
Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (Paramount
HS), who came in second place, while sophomore
Whitney Ashley (J.W. North HS)
was third and Butler finished sixth. Aliimatafitafi
placed third in the shot put, with Ashley in fourth
and sophomore
Aunjanae Stovall (Lynwood HS)
in fifth place.
