For
the third time in the last four years,
the Cerritos College women's track and
field team has won the South Coast
Conference Championships. Backed by 13
first placed finishes, the Falcons
easily won the title with 394 team
points at the finals on Friday at
Compton College. The team easily
outdistanced Mt. SAC, who came in second
place with 119 team points. The Falcon
qualifiers will now advance to the
Southern California Preliminaries, which
will be held next Saturday at Mt. San
Antonio.
The top
six from each event advance to the
prelims, while there will be a selection
of automatic qualifiers that will be
decided at a seeding meeting.
Sophomore
Jessica Barfield (Lynwood
HS) was a three-time champion in
individual races, while she also ran a
leg of a relay race that came in first
place. Also winning three individual
championships was sophomore
Karen Guravska (El
Dorado HS). As for Barfield, she
won the 100 meters (12.32), triple jump
(41' 6") and long jump (18' 2"), while
running the third leg of the 400-meter
relay team that posted a time of 48.31.
Joining her in that race were sophomore
Michella Crabtree (Cabrillo
HS), freshman
Cyntrail Pierce (Compton
HS), who won the 200 meters (25.57)
and freshman
Blair Allen (Lynwood HS),
who won the 400 meters in 58.24.
Guravska picked up her conference
championships in the pole vault (12'),
high jump (5' 4") and javelin with a
throw of 134' 8". The Falcons qualified
five athletes in the javelin, as
sophomore
Rachel Butler (Calvary
Chapel HS) took second place and
freshman
D'Auria Barker (Centennial
HS) came in third place. As a team,
Cerritos will have 30 entries in field
events.
Cerritos also took the top six spots in
the hammer throw, led by freshman
Arianna Lugo (Los Altos
HS), who won the event with a
distance of 156' 6", with sophomore
Whitney Ashley (J.W.
North HS) capturing the discus with
a toss of 143' 3". Other champions
included sophomore
Erin Straughter (Valencia
HS) in the 400-meter hurdles with a
time of 1:04.76, while sophomore
Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe
HS) won the 3000-meter steeplechase
in a time of 11:31.50, setting a new
school record. Straughter was also on
her way to winning the 100-meter
hurdles, but fell. However, she was
already an automatic qualifier.
