The Cerritos College
women's track and field team dominated the competition
at the Cerritos Invitational, as they posted two new
school records and won eight different events. The
Falcons, ranked #1 in the state, will now enter the USC
Invitational, which starts at 9:00 a.m. on Friday.
Setting new school records were sophomore
Sarah Muniz
(Bell Gardens HS), who posted a time of 11:47.66
in the 3000-meter steeplechase, while sophomore
Karen
Guravska (El Dorado HS) cleared 11' 6" in
the pole vault, which was a foot higher than her
previous best height. Muniz broke the old record in the
steeplechase of 11:48.63, which was set by Lynette
Thompson in 2005, while Guravska's height beat
Jennifer Espinoza, who set the old record of 11' in
2006.
Winning events for the Falcons were freshman sprinter
Cyntrail
Pierce (Compton HS), who turned in a time
of 11.8 in the 100 meters, while sophomore hurdler
Erin
Straughter (Valencia HS) captured both
the 100-meter hurdles (15.43) and 400-meter hurdles
(1:05.71). Sophomore
Jessica
Barfield (Lynwood HS) was also a
two-event winner, as she long jumped 18' 1/4" and triple
jumped 36' 11 1/2". In the throwing events, sophomore
Whitney Ashley
(J.W. North HS) recorded a distance of 144' 1" in
the discus, while freshman
Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (Paramount HS)
won the hammer with a throw of 144' 2", which was also
the second best distance in school history.
Also performing well for Cerritos were sophomore
Apryll White
(Kennedy HS) in the hurdles, placing fourth in
the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.85) and sixth in the
100-meter hurdles (16.49), while freshman
Alison
Bartsoch (Squalicum, WA HS) finished
fifth in both the 800 meters (2:26.05) and 1500 meters
(5:00.00).
The Falcons are incredibly talented and deep in the field
events, which was put on display. Freshman
Arianna Lugo
(Los Altos HS), who came in third in the hammer
with a toss of 142'2" also placed herself fifth on the
school's all-time list. As for Aliimatafitafi, she came
in second in the shot put at 44' 11", which is the
second-best toss in school history and also came in
eighth in the discus.
