As the season
progresses, it is becoming more and more
apparent to all involved that the Cerritos
College women's track team is one of the best in
the state. If they are to repeat as the state
champions, it may very well come down to the
depth of the team's throwing team. As this
weekend's California Relays, the Falcons
excelled once again, despite not entering their
full compliment of athletes. They will get
another chance to show off their skills after
the school hosts the Southern California
Heptathlon Championships this Tuesday and
Wednesday.
Leading the
way for the Falcons, who won two throwing
events, while placing second in three others and
third in two more, was freshman
Arianna
Lugo (Los Altos HS), who set a
new school record in the hammer throw with a
distance of 165' 10". She broke the old record
of 162' 5", which had stood for 12 years.
Joining Lugo in having a great day was sophomore
Whitney Ashley (J.W. North HS),
who came in second place in both the discus and
shot put. In the javelin, Cerritos took first,
third and fourth, with sophomore
Karen Guravska (El Dorado HS)
leading the pack. She was joined by freshman
D'Auria Barker (Centennial HS),
who came in third and sophomore
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS),
who placed fourth. Ashley was joined by
sophomore
Aunjanae Stovall (Lynwood HS)
in the shot put, as she came in fourth, while
freshman
Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (Paramount
HS) won the event.
In the running
events, freshman
Blair
Allen (Lynwood HS) won the
400 meters with a time of 59.11, while freshman
Elizabeth Sims (La Mirada HS)
turned in a time of 13.31 in the 100 meters,
good for second place. Sophomore
Brittany Stewart (Cypress HS)
placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of
27.38. Freshman
Aundrea Stovall (Lynwood HS)
beat everyone in the 400-meter IH with a time of
1:12.09, while distance runners
Sarah
Muniz (Santa Fe HS) and
Marlene Elizalde (St. Paul HS)
had record-breaking days. Muniz broke the old
record time of 11:48.63 in the 3000-meter
steeplechase by turning in a time of 11:35.14.
As for Elizalde, she also beat that time and now
has the second-fastest steeplechase time in
school history at 11:41.49, while the two placed
second and third, respectively in the race.
In other field
events, Guravska broke her own record in the
pole vault with a height of 12', and won the
event, while sophomore
Michella Crabtree (Cabrillo HS)
finished in second in the long jump at 17' 8
1/4". Sophomore
Brandi
McCall (Norwalk HS) took
second in the triple jump at 35' 8", while
sophomore
Erin Straughter (Valencia HS)
saw her time of 14.72 put her in second place in
the 110-meter IH.
