In winning six events
at the South Coast Conference Preview Meet at
Compton College on Friday, the Cerritos College women's
track and field team compiled more points than any other
team to win the meet. The Falcons had 243 team points,
which easily beat second place Mt. san Antonio College,
who had 135 team points. The team will now travel to
Sacramento for the Nike Invitational this Saturday.
Sophomore
Karen
Guravska (El Dorado HS) won three events
on the day, while sophomore
Jessica
Barfield (Lynwood HS) was the winner of
two events. Guravska cleared 12' in
the pole vault, matching her school-record height. She
also won the high jump with a height of 5' 4", while her
throw of 125' 2" in the javelin led a group of Falcons
to finish in the top five. Joining Guravska in the
javelin were sophomore
Rachel Butler
(Calvary Chapel HS),
D'Auria Barker
(Centennial HS), Barfield and
Aundrea
Stovall (Lynwood HS). It was Barfield
that won the long jump (17' 6") and triple jump (40'),
with sophomore
Michella
Crabtree (Cabrillo HS) in second place in
the long jump at 16' 10".
Also winning for Cerritos was freshman
Arianna Lugo
(Los Altos HS), who recorded a toss of 150' 4" in
the hammer throw. She was followed closely by freshman
Stephanie Aliimatafitafi (Paramount HS),
who came ins second place at 150' 4", with sophomore
Whitney Ashley
(J.W. North HS) in fourth at 138' 5".
In running events, the Falcons were without freshman sprinter
Cyntrail
Pierce (Compton HS), but still had
sophomores
Apryll White (Kennedy HS) and
Erin
Straughter (Valencia HS), who placed
third and fourth in the 400 meters. In distance races,
freshman
Marlene Elizalde (St. Paul HS) came in
third place in the 5000 meters (18:46.59), while
sophomore
Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe HS) placed fifth.
But it was the team's depth and talent in the field events
that allowed them to pull away from the pack. Aliimatafitafi
placed second in the hammer and shot put, with Ashley
placing second in the discus and third in the shot put.
Butler added a third place in the discus and fifth place
in the hammer to go with her finish in the javelin,
while Stovall came in second place in the 400-meter
hurdles (1:13.38) to add to her fifth place finishes in
the shot put and javelin.
