Looking to win their
third California Community College Athletic Association Women's
Track and Field state championship in a row, and fourth in five
years, the Cerritos College women's track team had to settle for
a tie for third place. Laney College, which had been a threat to
the Falcons the last four years, won the championship after a
pair of second place and a third place finish in the last three
years. The Eagles compiled 82 team points to beat second place
Sacramento City College, who had 61 team points, while Cerritos
and American River College were right behind with 60 points
each.
Highlighting the day for the Falcons was sophomore
Cyntrail
Pierce (
Dominguez HS), who turned in the
third longest wind-legal long jump in the country this year. Her
leap of 20' 1 3/4" set a new school record, however it still
wasn't enough to surpass Lauryn Newson of Laney, who won the
event with a distance of 20' 9 1/2", and also holds the nation's
longest jump this year. Pierce became the first Falcon to ever
jump over 20-feet, as she beat the old school record of 19' 5
1/4", set by
Sheila Frye in 1983.
Winning championships for Cerritos were freshman
Tanisha
Hawkins (
Long Beach Poly HS) in the 200
meters, while the 1600-meter relay team of sophomore
Sade Williams (
Long Beach Poly HS), Pierce,
freshman
Danielle Thomas (
Washington Prep HS) and
Hawkins easily beat the rest of the field with a time of
3:49.93. Their closest competition was Laney, who finished in
3:53.30. For Hawkins in the 200 meters, her time of 55.14 was
enough, as she held on to beat Williams, who was a close second
place at 55.46, while Pierce fell during the race and came in
ninth place.
Hawkins also competed in the 200 meters and placed third with
a time of 24.44, with Pierce coming in ninth place at 25.37.
Over the course of the championships, Hawkins had a hand in 28
of the team's 60 points. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore
Elizabeth
Sims (
La Mirada HS) placed sixth
in 1:07.36 and also pole vaulted 9' 5" to come in eighth place.
In other field events, freshman
Janay Tillett
(
Birmingham HS) took fourth place with a throw of 41' 5
1/2", with sophomore
Maria Savea
(
Green Valley, NV HS) registering a throw of 119' 1" in
the javelin for fifth place. Sophomore
Aundrea
Stovall (
Lynwood HS) tied for fifth place
in the high jump at 5' 1", while her 4079 points in the
heptathlon earned her a seventh place finish. Freshman
Zakiya
Cameron was an eighth place finisher in the triple jump
with a leap of 37' while sophomore
Arianna Lugo
(
Los Altos HS) took 11th place in the hammer
throw with a toss of 137' 8".
