11.14.11 - Team earns post-season awards
After getting to
within one victory of advancing to the state
championships, the Cerritos College women's water polo
team has had several players earn post-season accolades.
The Falcons, who finished the season 27-5 and won the
South Coast Conference Championship, saw sophomore
Shelby Gleason (Los Altos HS)
earned the conference's Player of the Year honor, while
head coach
Sergio Macias
was named the SCC Coach of the Year for the fourth time
in his career and second year in a row. In addition to
the conference award, Gleason was named All-American and
2nd Team All-Southern California, while being joined by
sophomore
Adriana
Rodriguez (Montebello HS), who was
also named All-American, 1st Team All-Southern
California and 1st Team All-SCC...[more]
11.12.11 - Pair of losses ends season for Cerritos
After
opening the Southern California Regional Playoffs with a
9-6 win over Orange Coast College, the Cerritos College
women's water polo team, seeded #3, were defeated by
#2-seeded Golden West College, 8-5 in the semi-final
game. A win over the Rustlers would have sent the
Falcons (27-5) to the championship game and earned them
a berth in the state championships, which will be held
at the Cerritos Aquatic Center next weekend. The team
then faced South Coast Conference rival Long Beach City
College in the third place game, and were defeated,

11.06.11 - Falcons earn #3 seed for playoffs
After winning the
South Coast Conference championship for the third time
in the last four seasons, the Cerritos College women's
water polo team was seeded #3 for the upcoming Southern
California Regional Playoffs, which will take place at
Riverside College. The Falcons (26-3) will face
#6-seeded Orange Coast College (20-8), who finished
fourth in the Orange Empire Conference at 4:30 p.m. on
Friday. The winner of the game will square off against
either #2-seeded Golden West College, or one of the
at-large teams at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday...[more]
11.05.11 - Win in sudden death gives team championship
Sophomore
Shelby Gleason (Los Altos HS) scored in
sudden death to give the Cerritos College women's water
polo team their third South Coast Conference
championship in the last four years with their 8-7
victory over rival Long Beach City College on Saturday
at Mt. San Antonio College. The Falcons, who defeated
the Vikings, 5-3 in their only other meeting, will more
than likely be the #3-seeded team for the Southern
California Regional Playoffs, which will take place at
Riverside College next weekend...[more]
11.03.11 - Pair of wins puts Falcons in SCC finals
On the
strength of their 17-1 win over Los Angeles Trade-Tech
College, followed by a 10-4 victory over Mt. San Antonio
College, the Cerritos College women's water polo team
will now face rival Long Beach City College in the
championship game of the South Coast Conference
Tournament at Mt. San Antonio College on Friday. A win
would mark the third straight conference championship
for the Falcons. Cerritos (25-3), who went undefeated
in SCC play during the regular season, handed the
Vikings a 5-3 loss back in September. Cerritos will
likely also qualify for the Southern California Regional
Playoffs, which will take place at Riverside College on

10.26.11 - Cerritos posts first shutout of the season
Over
the last five seasons, the Cerritos College women's
water polo team has posted at least one shutout, and
were close to going the entire 2011 season without
recording one. That was until they defeated Los Angeles
Trade-Tech College, 17-0 in their final regular season
game of the year. The Falcons (22-3) will now compete in
the South Coast Conference Tournament on November 3-5 at
Mt. San Antonio College.
In the win over LA Trade-Tech (0-10, 0-7), 10 different
players scored, while sophomore
Stephanie Tuning (Los Altos HS) set a single-game school record with 11 steals. Her total of 80 steals on the year now ranks her third in school history, with the 93 steals recorded by Hanna Anzai in 2005 the school record. As a team, the Falcons had 23 steals, with freshman goalkeeper
Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) posting three to go along with her six saves.
Freshman Yuri Vela (Schurr HS) scored a team-high four goals, with Tuning and freshman
Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS),
Janine Loera (Paramount HS) and Joselin Castro (Paramount HS) all scoring twice, with Gabayeron and Loera also making a pair of saves...[more]
10.22.11 - Falcons win two close games at tournament
With
the playoffs looming in the next few weeks, the Cerritos
College women's water polo team is getting good
experience in close games. In the Battle at the Beach
Tournament at Long Beach City College over the weekend,
the Falcons won a pair of close games on the second day
after splitting their two games on Friday. The Falcons,
ranked in the top five in the state, opened the
tournament with a 12-5 win over Palomar College,
followed by a 14-8 loss to Golden West College. On the
second day, Cerritos (22-3) posted a 6-4 win over
Fullerton College and then concluded the tournament with
an 8-7 win over South Coast Conference opponent Chaffey
College. The Falcons, who lead the SCC with a 6-0 mark,
will close out their regular season at 3:00 p.m. at home
against Los Angeles Trade-Tech College (0-8, 0-6). The
conference tournament will be held on November 3-5 at
Mt. San Antonio College.
In the close-knit affair against Chaffey, freshman
goalkeeper
Sharon Ku (Cerritos HS) came up with 10
saves and even assisted on a goal, while sophomore
Adriana
Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) led the way with
three goals. Sophomore

(Downey HS) each scored twice in the win. The
Falcons opened up a 5-2 lead against Fullerton, but held
off the Hornets, thanks to a pair of goals and steals
from freshman
Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS). She
scored both of her goals in the second quarter, with the
second putting the team up, 4-1. Rodriguez led the team
with four steals, while Ku posted nine saves...[more]
10.19.11 - Quick start results in big conference win
The
Cerritos College women's water polo team has a knack of
jumping out to early leads in their matches and using
that momentum to secure wins. The Falcons, who improved
to 19-2 overall and a South Coast Conference leading
6-0, opened up an 8-2 halftime lead at Mt. San Antonio
College on Wednesday and propelled that into a 14-5
victory. Cerritos, ranked #3 in the state, will now
compete in the Battle at the Beach Tournament this
weekend at Long Beach City College. They will open with
a 12:25 p.m. game against Palomar College, followed by a
4:45 p.m. game against Golden West College. How they do
in those two games will determine their opponent and

10.13.11 - Cerritos wins non-conference game
Squeezing a
non-conference game into their busy schedule, the
Cerritos College women's water polo team posted a 12-2
over American River College on Thursday night at the
Falcon Aquatic Center. Ranked #3 in the state, the
Falcons improved to 18-2 on the year, while American
River, a member of the Big 8 Conference, is now
6-7. Cerritos will now travel to Mt. San Antonio College
for a 3:00 p.m. South Coast Conference on Wednesday.
After American River tied the game at 1-1 in the first
quarter, the Falcons scored the next six goals to take a
7-1 lead. At the buzzer in the first quarter, sophomore

10.12.11 - Falcons pull out crucial win over Chaffey
In one
of their most important games of the season, the
Cerritos College women's water polo team was able to
come back from an early deficit to record an 8-7 South
Coast Conference win at Chaffey College on Wednesday.
The win improved the Falcons conference record to 5-0,
while they are now 17-2 on the year. Cerritos will now
host American River College in a non-conference game at
7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Falcon Aquatic Center...[more]
10.07.11 - Loss doesn't faze head coach Sergio Macias
Although he saw his team's eight-game winning streak
come to an end, Cerritos College women's water polo
coach Sergio
Macias is not too concerned about his state's
#3-ranked team. The Falcons (16-2), who suffered an 8-3
defeat at the hands of Orange Coast College at the
Pasadena City Tournament on Friday, came back to
defeat Cuesta College later in the day, 10-8 to start a
new winning streak. Cerritos will resume South Coast
Conference play at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Chaffey
College, a team they defeated a week ago, 14-12 at the

10.05.11 - Cerritos wins eighth straight game
The
Cerritos College women's water polo team remained
undefeated in South Coast Conference play and won their
eighth straight match after defeating El Camino College,
17-10 on Wednesday. The Falcons, ranked #3 in the state,
are now 15-1 overall and 4-0 in SCC play. They will
compete in the Pasadena City Tournament on Friday...[more]
10.01.11 - Falcons win San Diego Mesa Tournament
Through
the first three games of the San Diego Mesa Tournament,
the Cerritos College women's water polo team had
outscored their opponents, 51-18, which included wins
over Sierra College (13-6), Citrus College (19-6) and
Southwestern College (19-6). But, in their final game of
the tournament, the Falcons (14-1) had their hands full
in a 14-12 win over South Coast Conference opponent
Chaffey College. Cerritos will now resume South Coast
Conference play on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. when they

09.28.11 - Early lead results in 15-4 win
After the first
quarter of their 15-4 South Coast Conference win at Rio
Hondo College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College women's
water polo starters got a chance to watch the rest of
the roster finish out the game. The Falcons (10-1
overall, 3-0 SCC) opened up a 7-1 lead after the first
quarter, while the rest of the team outscored the
Roadrunners, 8-3 the remainder of the contest. The team
will now compete in the San Diego Mesa Tournament this

09.21.11 - Cerritos makes quick work of Pasadena City
In the first two
quarters of their South Coast Conference women's water
polo match on Wednesday, Cerritos College was able to
display their speed and passing accuracy, as they jumped
out to a 9-0 lead against Pasadena City College, en
route to a 16-6 victory. The win by the Falcons improves
their overall record to 9-1, while they are 2-0 in SCC
play, while the Lancers dropped to 0-2 in the SCC and
overall. Cerritos will now travel to Rio Hondo College
next Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. conference match.
Even though they got off to a slow start in the first
quarter, the Falcons were able to constantly pressure
the Lancer defense and goalkeeper Shelby Gregg. It was
just a 2-0 lead before Cerritos scored seven times in
the second stanza, with freshman

09.17.11 - Falcons win three of four at tournament
Facing
some of the stronger teams in the state at the Chaffey
Tournament over the weekend, the Cerritos College
women's water polo team posted three convincing wins,
while their only loss came against one of the state's
powerhouse programs. The Falcons (8-1) opened with wins
over San Diego Mesa College (12-3) and American River
College (11-6) on the first day and then followed that
with a 10-1 loss at the hands of Riverside College.
Cerritos closed out the tournament with a 20-2 victory
over Santa Rosa College. The team will now continue
South Coast Conference play on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.

09.14.11 - Cerritos defeats LB City in showdown
In an early season
showdown against rival Long Beach City College, the
Cerritos College women's water polo team provided enough
offense to produce a 5-3 win in their South Coast
Conference opener on Wednesday at the Falcon Aquatic
Center. It was the opening conference game for both
teams. The Falcons (5-0) will now compete in the Chaffey
Tournament this weekend.
"Our defense played well enough and Long Beach missed a
few shots," said Cerritos head coach
Sergio Macias. "I really had no idea what to expect playing Long Beach so early in the season. It gives us an idea of what kind of team they are, as well as a chance to get an idea of what kind of team we're going to be. Playing them helps us for the tournament this weekend because there are going to be some very good teams in it."
The low-scoring game saw the Vikings (1-2) get on the board first, as Christine Meier scored with 7:36 left in the first quarter. Sophomores
Adriana Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) and
Shelby Gleason (Los Altos HS) followed with goals to give Cerritos 2-1 lead before freshman
Katherine Gabayeron (Cerritos HS) scored on Vikings goalkeeper Lindsay Smith with 7:34 left in the second quarter. The Falcons never relinquished the lead and held off Long Beach City each time they scored to get within a goal..[more]
09.09.11 - Falcons start season off with tourney title
For the
Cerritos College women's water polo team, they started
the 2011 season by winning their four games at
the Cuesta Tournament over the weekend. They were the
only team to win all four of their games, and were
crowned the champions of the tournament for the second
season in a row. The Falcons (4-0) will now jump right
into South Coast Conference play and host rival Long
Beach City College at 3:00 p.m. at the Falcon Aquatic

05.03.11 - Former Cerritos water polo players square off
A pair of former
Cerritos College women's water polo players squared off
against each other in the Western Water Polo Association
championship match last Sunday. Daisy Carrillo,
who was a member of the Falcons first South Coast
Conference championship in school history during the
2006 season, was competing for Loyola Marymount
University, while Natalie Peng, who
played on the 2008 State Championship team, was in the

In addition to having three Cerritos College women's
water polo players earn All-South Coast Conference
recognition, all three also earned either
All-American or All-Southern California honors. The
Falcons, who finished third in the SCC and finished with

Southern California Regional Playoffs, saw sophomores
