The Cerritos College women's water
polo team got right back into their winning ways after
dropping a South Coast Conference games against Long
Beach City College last week. The Falcons, competing in
the San Diego Mesa Tournament, swept through all four
teams they faced to win their second tournament
championship of the year. Earlier in the season, they
won the Cuesta Tournament. Cerritos (13-2) opened with
their second shutout in school history, as they blanked
Santa Monica College, 20-0 and then followed it with a
12-5 victory over Grossmont College. The Falcons came
back the next day and squeaked out a 13-12 win over
Fullerton College, who is ranked #5 in the state and
beat Cerritos twice last season. In the championship
game, Cerritos exacted more revenge, as they made quick
work of the host Olympians, with an 11-4 win. Last
season, San Diego Mesa beat the Falcons.
This week, the team will resume
conference action, as they travel to Pasadena City on
Wednesday for a 4:15. p.m. match.
Balanced scoring was all the rage for
the Falcons in their wins during the tournament, with 10
different players scoring goals in the victory over
Santa Monica, as the quartet of sophomore
Michelle
Garoutte
(Lakewood
HS),
along with freshmen Krystal
Perez
(Pioneer
HS),
Ashley Badali
(Gahr
HS)
and
Gloria
Quintana
(Montebello
HS)
lead the team with three goals apiece. The defense
helped create the majority of their scoring
opportunities, as the Falcons posted 26 steals, with
Badali and freshman
Kimberly Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
finishing with six and five steals, respectively.

got back to her scoring streak, as she accounted for
five goals in the win over Grossmont, with sophomore
Berlyn

both adding two goals. The defense continued to be the
key to the win, with sophomore

accounting for six of the team's 18 steals. In goal,
sophomore

made five saves, while sophomore
Sarah Kenny

Habra HS)
finished with four.
In the hard-fought win over
Fullerton, the Falcon put a barrage of shots on the
Hornet goal, with Sanchez scoring four goals in her five
shots, with the team finished with 27 shots. Grace
Quintana and Jeannette Diaz (three assists) each scored
three times in the win, while Barbie Diaz and Kenny
combined for five saves. In closing out the
championship, Jeannette Diaz led the way with four goals
in the win over San Diego Mea, while Kenny had seven
saves and Barbie Diaz chipped in with five stops.
