The Cerritos College women's water
polo team swept through their four opponents at the
Pasadena Bowl this past weekend to win their third
championship of the season and extended their winning
streak to nine games. With the four wins, the Falcons
are now 18-2 overall and resume South Coast Conference
action on Wednesday when they host Rio Hondo College in
a 4:15 p.m. match.
On the first day, the Falcons
recorded their second shutout of the season and third in
school history, as they posted a 17-0 win over Los
Angeles Valley College before coming away with a
hard-fought 12-7 win over Citrus College. Then, on
Saturday, Cerritos opened up by handing Orange Coast
College their lone loss of the tournament with a 14-7
victory and closed out the title by recording an 11-9
win over a very good Cuesta College team.
Against LA Valley, 11 different
players got into the scoring column, with the duo of
freshman
Kimberly Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
and sophomore
Christina
Edwards
(El
Rancho HS)
leading the team with three goals each, while freshmen
Britney
Hernandez
(La
Habra HS)
and
Daisy
Carrillo
(Montebello
HS)
each added two goals. As they have done throughout the
season, the Falcons used their defense to help set up
their offense, as they registered 26 steals and recorded
just five turnovers to help them in the lop-sided win.
Sophomore
Roxy Cariaga
(Cerritos
HS)
led the defensive attack with five steals, with freshman
Andrea Land
(Downey
HS)
finishing with four. Freshman goalkeeper
Sarah Kenny
(La
Habra HS)
made five saves, while sophomore
Barbie Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
was not asked to make one.
It was more balance and defense that
allowed Cerritos to post the win over Citrus, with
freshman
Grace
Quintana
(Montebello
HS)
leading the offense with three goals, while freshman
Vivian
Aguirre
(Downey
HS)
and Carrillo each added two goals and a team-high four
steals, with Cariaga and sophomore
Hanna Anzai
(Cerritos
HS)
each contributing three steals. Carrillo was the
offensive star in the win over Orange Coast, as the
scored six of the team's 14 goals in as many shots,
while she also accounted for four steals, with sophomore
Berlyn
Sanchez
(El
Rancho HS)
chipping in with three goals. Barbie Diaz and Kenny
combined to record nine steals to help the Falcons in
the win.
