With second place in the South Coast
Conference at stake, the Cerritos College women's water
polo team was able to withstand every challenge by
Chaffey College and recorded an 18-15 win at Cerritos on
Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons, rated #4
in the state, finish at 6-1 in the SCC and 25-2 overall,
while the Panthers, rated #3 in the state, drop to 5-2
in the SCC and 24-5 overall. Cerritos also kept their
school-record winning streak alive, now at 16 in a row,
while they will wait until November 2-4 to compete in
the conference tournament, which will be held at
Pasadena City College. With their second place standing
in the conference, the Falcons will be the #2-seeded
team in the tournament.
Cerritos extended their 9-4 halftime
lead to 11-5 in the third quarter, only to see Chaffey
close to within 11-8. The Falcons got their lead up to
six goals after scores by freshmen
Vivian
Aguirre (Downey
HS) and
Daisy
Carrillo (Montebello
HS). Right after Chaffey closed the score to
11-8 with 3:29 left in the third quarter, sophomore
Berlyn
Sanchez (El
Rancho HS) and freshman
Grace
Quintana (Bell
Gardens HS) scored consecutive goals to push
the lead back to 13-8. The Panthers scored with six
seconds left in the third quarter to get to within 13-9.
It was 13-11 with 6:24 left in the
fourth quarter, but three straight goals by freshman
sensation
Jeannette Diaz
(Montebello HS)
gave the Falcons a five-goal cushion, which turned out
to be enough to help preserve the win. Chaffey did pick
up a goal with 1:35 left to make the score 17-15, but
Quintana picked up an insurance goal with 1:13 left in
the game.
On the day, Carrillo led the team
with five goals and three field blocks, while Diaz added
four tallies and a team-high six steals. Sanchez also
scored four times, while Quintana chipped in with three
goals and three field blocks. Freshman goalkeeper
Sarah Kenny
(La Habra HS)
made the saves when needed, and turned away six shots. |
