For the first time in school history,
the Cerritos College women's water polo team won a
tournament championship, as the Falcons defeated four
teams to capture the title at the Cuesta Tournament over
the weekend. The Falcons (4-0) entered the tournament
ranked #8 in the state and will likely move up in the
rankings. This Wednesday, they will host Mt. San Antonio
College at 4:15 p.m. in their South Coast Conference
opener before they compete in the Chaffey Tournament.
The Falcons opened the tournament
with an 18-2 win over 14th-ranked Foothill College,
followed by an 18-9 win over San Joaquin Delta College.
On the second day, they posted a 10-4 win over Modesto
College in the semi-finals before defeating the
10th-rated host Cougars, 11-6 to win the championship.
In that game, Cerritos was able to
get Cuesta into foul trouble and took advantage of 14
power-plays and scored seven man-up goals. Freshmen
Jeannette Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
and
Daisy
Carrillo
(Montebello
HS)
each scored three times to lead the Falcons, while
freshman
Grace
Quintana
(Montebello

scored twice. Leading 5-3 at halftime, each team scored
once in the third period, before the Falcons scored five
times in the fourth period to put the game out of reach.
In goal, the duo of freshman
Sarah Kenny
(La
Habra HS)
and sophomore
Barbie Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
combined to turn away eight shots, while sophomore

Sanchez
(El
Rancho HS)
led the team with three steals.
Diaz scored five times in the win
over Modesto, while Diaz made six saves in goal, with
Kenny adding four. Sanchez chipped in with two goals and
two steals, while Quintana chipped in with a goal and
two assists. It was a balanced scoring attack against
San Joaquin Delta, with Diaz scoring six times to lead
the team. Quintana added four goals and two assists,
with Carrillo accounting for three goals and two
assists. In goal, Kenny and Diaz each made four saves.
Cerritos opened the tournament by
jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the first half, and had
eight different players score at least one goal.

team with four goals, while freshman

Gardens HS)
