The Cerritos College women's water
polo team found out firsthand why Riverside College is
the defending state champion and current top-rated team
in the state when they faced them in the semi-finals of
the Chaffey Tournament this past weekend. The Falcons,
off to their best start in school history at 7-0 after
early wins over Golden West and Santa Ana in the
tournament, dropped their first game of the season, as
the Tigers posted a 9-2 victory, which was their 34th
consecutive win. However, Cerritos did respond with a
16-8 win over American River College to take third place
in the tournament. The Falcons (8-1) will now return to
South Coast Conference action, as they travel to Los
Angeles Trade-Tech College for a 4:15 match on
Wednesday.
In the loss to Riverside, the Falcons
stayed close through the first quarter and trailed just
2-1, but by half, it was 5-1 as the Tigers chipped away
to extended their lead. Although the team was able to
get off 22 shots in the match, they struggled when it
came to maintaining possession of the ball and committed
14 turnovers. The bright spot in the match was freshman
goalkeeper
Sarah Kenny
(La
Habra HS),
who made 10 saves.
Cerritos responded in fine fashion in
their win over American River, as the team had 10
different goal scorers and kept their opponents off
balance the entire match. Freshman
Britney
Hernandez
(La
Habra HS)
led the attack with three goals, while Kenny chipped in
with 10 more saves. Freshman
Jeannette Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
had 15 goals for the Falcons in the four-game
tournament. |
