Facing the #2-rated team in the state
is one thing, but to have them in your conference is
another. The Cerritos College women's water polo team
who are ranked #3 in the state, squared off against
cross-town rival and #2-rated Long Beach City College in
a South Coast Conference match on Wednesday with the
winner having the inside track on the conference title.
The Falcons stayed close for the first two quarters, but
a 4-0 third quarter for the Vikings propelled them to a
10-5 victory. The loss dropped Cerritos to 9-2 on the
season and 2-1 in conference play, while Long Beach
improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the SCC. The only
other loss for the Falcons was against Riverside
College, who is ranked #1 in the state and is the
defending state champion. Cerritos will now compete in
the San Diego Mesa Tournament, which will be held on
Friday and Saturday.
After falling behind 2-0 at the end
of the first quarter, the Falcons scored three of the
next four goals to tie the game at 3-3. Two of them came
from freshman scoring sensation
Jeannette Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS),
with sophomore All-American
Berlyn
Sanchez
(El
Rancho HS)
accounting for the other tally. But, at the buzzer at
the end of the second quarter, the Vikings scored to
take a 4-3 lead. They continued their offensive attack
and ended up scoring six unanswered goals to take a 10-3
lead before the Falcons scored two goals to make the
final score, 10-5.
Sophomores
Christina
Edwards
(El
Rancho HS)
and
Crystal May
(Pioneer
HS)
picked up the other two goals for Cerritos, while
sophomore goalkeeper
Barbie Diaz
(Bell
Gardens HS)
recorded six saves, with freshman

(La
Habra HS)
registering one stop. |
