After the first period of their South
Coast Conference Tournament championship game, the
Cerritos College women’s water polo team held a 3-0 lead
over cross town rival Long Beach City College. The
winner of the game would clinch the conference
championship and earn the #2-seed for the Southern
California Regional Playoffs. By the end of the game,
the Vikings had been able to shut the Falcons down and
recorded an 11-7 win. Cerritos, who won a share of the
regular season conference title for the first time in
school history, will now be seeded third for the
playoffs.
The Southern
California Regional Playoffs will take place at the
Golden West College Aquatic Center, with the Falcons
(25-5) opening against #6-seeded Cuesta College at 4:30
p.m. on Friday. The winner of that game will advance to
the semi-finals on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. against either
Long Beach City or their yet to be determined opponent.
The top three teams from the regional playoffs advance
to the state championship. The Falcons have never
qualified for the state championships and will be
looking for their first-ever post-season win, as well.
In the loss to
the Vikings, Cerritos was led by freshman
Stephanie
Rosero (Downey HS), who scored three
goals, along with sophomore
Ashley Badali
(Gahr HS), who also contributed three goals and
added two steals. Sophomore
Vivian
Aguirre (Downey HS) led the defense with
three steals, while sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Kenny
(La Habra HS) turned away nine shots. |
