After winning the first playoff game in
school history, the Cerritos College women’s water polo
team suffered two straight losses and were eliminated
from the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The
Falcons (26-7) were seeded #3 in the playoffs and lost
their two games to South Coast Conference opponents.
The team opened
with a thrilling 8-7 overtime victory over Cuesta
College, which advanced them to the semi-finals. Even if
the team lost their semi-final game, a win in the third
place game would have propelled them to the state
championships for the first time in school history.
However, they dropped an 8-4 decision to cross-town
rival Long Beach City College and were then defeated by
Chaffey College, 7-6. The Falcons had split their two
games this season against both teams.
In the win over
Cuesta, freshman
Stephanie
Rosero (Downey HS) led the team with
three goals and six steals, while five different players
scored one goal each. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Kenny
(La Habra HS) came up with 10 saves in the
victory. The team struggled offensively against LBCC, as
Rosero, the team’s leading scorer, was held without a
goal. Sophomore
Ashley Badali
(Gahr HS) tallied three goals and two steals
against Chaffey, while Rosero chipped in with two goals. |
