For the second week in a row, the
Cerritos College women’s water polo team swept through
their four opponents at a tournament to claim the
championship. Last week, the Falcons (16-4) won the San
Diego Mesa Tournament and over the weekend, they were
the only team to go 4-0 at the Pasadena City Tournament
to claim the title. With the four victories, Cerritos
extended their winning streak to 11 games and will look
to add on to that when they host Pasadena City College
in a South Coast Conference game at 3:00 p.m. on
Wednesday.
The Falcons
opened the tournament with a 19-10 win over Citrus
College in a game where Cerritos led 8-0 after the first
period. Later that day, they saw a 6-1 lead turn into a
6-6 tie against Cuesta College before scoring the final
two goals of the game to come away with an 8-6 win. On
the second day of the tournament, the Falcons registered
a 14-6 win against Orange Coast College before closing
it out with a 14-8 victory over the host Lancers.
In the win over
Citrus, the team wasted little time in jumping out to an
early lead, as freshman
Jackie
Guerrero (Montebello HS) scored three of
the team’s goals, while freshman
Denise Vega
(Montebello HS) added two of her own. It was a
10-0 lead before the Owls got on the board, but by then
the Falcons had secured a big lead and cruised to the
victory. Guerrero finished the game with a team-high
five goals, while sophomore
Ashley Badali
(Gahr HS) finished with one goal in each of the
four periods and also contributed three steals and two
assists. Vega concluded the game with three goals and a
team-high five steals, with sophomore
Vivian
Aguirre (Downey HS) also scoring three
times with three assists.
It was a 5-0
start for the Falcons against Cuesta, as freshman
Stephanie
Rosero (Downey HS) scored one in the
first and three more times in the second period. But,
with a 6-1 lead with 7:33 left in the fourth period, the
Cougars scored the next five goals to tie the game at
6-6 with 2:49 remaining. Rosero picked up her fifth goal
of the game with 1:49 left, while Badali gave Cerritos
their 8-6 final score on a goal with 1:16 left. Aguirre
was solid on defense with five steals, while Badali
added three. Sophomore
Sarah Kenny
(La Habra HS) made seven big saves and also had
two steals to earn the win.
Strong first
periods continued to help the Falcons along, as they
jumped out to a 4-0 advantage against Orange Coast on
the second day of the tournament. Guerrero scored twice
in the first period, as did Aguirre and freshman
Angela
Chiaromonte (Schurr HS). Leading by just
7-4 at halftime, Rosero took the game into her own hands
and scored all four of the team’s goals in the third
period to help pull away from the Pirates, while
Chiaromonte picked up two more goals in the fourth
period. In the game, Rosero finished with five goals and
three steals, with Chiaromonte adding three goals and
two steals. As for Vega, she had four steals, with
Badali picking up three and Kenny added two while in
goal.
Once again, it
was Rosero to rose to the top, as she scored five goals
in the final game against Pasadena City, as the Falcons
limited the Lancers to just single goals in the second
and third periods. Chiaromonte picked up three goals,,
while Badali had two to go along with three steals.
Kenny shared time in goal with freshman
Hannah
Pawlowski (La Serna HS), and the two
combined to make 10 saves. |
