Freshman
Stephanie
Rosero (Downey HS) scored eight goals to
help lead the Cerritos College women’s water polo team
to a 16-8 South Coast Conference home win against
Pasadena City College on Wednesday afternoon. The win
was the 12th in a row for the state’s 2nd-ranked
team, as it improved their record to 17-4 on the year
and 4-1 in the SCC. As for the Lancers, they dropped to
8-9 on the year and 2-2 in the conference. It was also
the Lancers’ seventh consecutive loss. Cerritos will now
look for their third straight tournament title in a row
when they compete in the Citrus Tournament this weekend.
Rosero helped
the Falcons rebound from an early 2-0 deficit in the
first period, by scoring three of the team’s five goals
to take a 5-3 lead. She broke a 2-2 tie on a tally with
2:41 remaining in the first period, and then followed
that up with a goal to make it 5-3. After PCC’s Lybov
Tchougounova made it 5-4, freshman
Jackie
Guerrero (Montebello HS) gave the Falcons
a 6-4 lead, while Rosero put it at 7-4 by halftime on a
goal with 33 seconds remaining.
Looking to
counter the play of the 6-foot-1 Tchougounova, Cerritos
went for long passes to move the ball down the pool
quickly and also used the inside play of Rosero to help
pull away in the second half. The Falcons outscored the
Lancers, 8-1 in the third period, with Rosero picking up
her final four goals, while she sat out the fourth
period.
Sophomore
goalkeeper
Sarah Kenny (La Habra HS) came through
with some big saves in the game, finishing with 10,
while she also posted two steals to help shut down
Pasadena City.
Along with the
eight goals by Rosero, she added two steals, with
sophomore
Ashley Badali (Gahr HS) chipping in with
three goals. As for Tchougounova, she finished with four
goals on the day. |
