With basically a new team in the water
this season, the Cerritos College women’s water polo
team knew they would have to look for some freshmen to
step up and make an immediate impact in games. The main
impact at the Cuesta Tournament over the weekend came
from freshman Stephanie Rosero (Downey HS),
who scored 18 goals over the four games. The Falcons
picked up wins in three of those games, as they opened
with a 13-4 win over Foothill College, After the team
suffered a close 11-10 loss to San Joaquin Delta
College, they came back the next day and recorded wins
over Santa Ana College (13-12) and Fresno City College
(11-4) to go 3-1 in the tournament. The team will now
travel to Chaffey College on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m.
game to start the South Coast Conference season.
In the opening
win over Foothill, Rosero accounted for six of the
team’s goals and didn’t miss a shot, while freshman
Jackie Guerrero (Montebello HS) added three
goals. The Falcons held a 6-0 lead at halftime and
played solid the rest of the game to secure the win.
Sophomore Vivian Aguirre (Downey HS) added
three assists and three steals, while Rosero also had
three steals. In the loss to Delta, the game was tied
7-7 at halftime, while the Falcons trailed 10-9 heading
into the fourth period. After the Mustangs went up 11-9
with 4:22 remaining, Cerritos shut them out the rest of
the way, but could only get one more ball into the net,
with sophomore Ashley Badali (Gahr HS)
scoring with 2:02 left in the game. Rosero finished with
four goals, two assists and two steals, while Badali
added a pair of goals. Sophomore goalie Sarah Kenny
(La Habra HS) played a solid game and made four
saves.
On the second
day, Cerritos came out on the winning end of a one-goal
game, with Rosero getting her fourth goal of the game
with 38 seconds left to win the game. Trailing 4-2 after
the first period and 6-5 at halftime, freshman
Janelly Castro (Bell Gardens HS) and Badali
scored for the Falcons to give them a 7-6 lead they
would not relinquish. The game was tied and eight, nine
and 10 before freshman Angela Chiaromonte (Schurr
HS) gave the team an 11-10 lead with 5:13 left.
Badali picked up her third goal of the game to give
Cerritos a 12-10 lead before the Dons scored twice to
tie the game. Rosero then scored what turned out to be
the game-winner.
In the final
game, Cerritos shut out Fresno City through the first
half and cruised to the win with Rosero picking up three
goals. Badali and freshman Hannah Llamas (Gahr
HS) scored three each, while Kenny made five saves
in the net. |
