The Cerritos College women’s water polo
team had a very successful first day at the Chaffey
Tournament over the weekend, winning their two games. On
the second day, they were faced with two of the top
ranked teams in the state, and suffered two tough
losses. With the split over the weekend, the Falcons are
now 5-4 on the season and will resume South Coast
Conference play on Wednesday when they face Mt. San
Antonio College.
On the first
day, Cerritos defeated Santa Ana College, 9-8, which was
their second one-goal win against the Dons in two weeks.
That was followed with an 8-7 victory over Golden West
College. On the second day, the Falcons were defeated by
American River College (12-7) and Riverside College by a
score of 16-8.
In the win over
Santa Ana, freshman
Stephanie
Rosero (Downey HS) led the team with
three goals, while freshman
Denise Vega
(Montebello HS) added two goals. After trailing
1-0 after the first period, Cerritos scored five times
in the second and held a 5-3 lead at the half. It was a
tight match the entire second half, as the two teams
traded goals, with the Falcons coming out on top.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Kenny
(La Habra HS) finished the match with eight
saves. Rosero was joined by sophomore
Ashley Badali
(Gahr HS) and freshman
Jackie
Guerrero (Montebello HS) with two goals
in another close win. Neither team lead by more than two
goals in the match, with Kenny once again coming up with
big saves to secure the win.
Against American
River, the Falcons fell behind 7-4 at halftime and was
never able to mount any sort of comeback. Rosero led the
team with three goals, while four other players each
scored once to account for the other tallies. Kenny once
again played in the net and came away with five saves.
It was a disastrous first period against Riverside that
did in Cerritos, as they fell behind 6-0. It wasn’t
until the fourth period that the Falcons could get their
offense started, scoring six times, but it was too late
by then. Rosero had five of the team’s goals, with
Badali picking up two. |
