Heading into their South Coast Conference
match, the Cerritos College women’s water polo team made
it a point to focus on executing their set plays against
a team that has yet to win a game all season. The end
result was a 13-0 win over Los Angeles Trade-Tech
College, as the Falcons scored nine goals in the first
period and spent the rest of the match working on their
passing and defense. The win by the seventh-ranked
Falcons (7-4 overall, 2-1 SCC) sets them up for the San
Diego Mesa Tournament, which will take place on Friday
and Saturday.
In a strange
twist, 13 players each scored one goal for Cerritos,
while the team turned in their first shutout of the
season and fifth in school history. The Falcons posted
three shutouts last season. Freshman goalkeeper
Hannah
Pawlowski (La Serna HS) turned away all
five shots to pick up the win.
The defense
executed effectively, with the team recording 19 steals.
The duo of freshmen
Angela
Chiaromonte (Schurr HS) and
Daisy
Gutierrez (Bell Gardens HS) each led the
team with four steals apiece, while freshman
Katie
Wallace (Whittier HS) finished with
three. The team played 14 players with 13 of them
scoring, while 10 picked up at least one steal. |
