After
finishing
in third
place at
the
Southern
California
Regional
Playoffs,
the
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team
will be
making
their
first
appearance
at the
State
Championships,
which
will
take
place
this
Thursday
through
Saturday
at
Merced
College.
The team
advanced
to the
state
championships
after
defeating
Fullerton
College,
18-10 in
the
third
place
game of
the
regional
playoffs
on
Saturday.
The
Falcons
(28-3),
seeded
#3 from
Southern
California,
will
open the
state
championships
on
Thursday
at 10:30
a.m. and
face
American
River
College
(23-5),
the
#2-seed
from
Northern
California.
The
third
team in
Bracket
B is
Riverside
Community
College
(29-1),
the
top-seed
from the
South
and
defending
state
champions.
Cerritos
will
play
them at
4:30
p.m. on
Thursday,
while
they get
Friday
off.
The six
teams
that
reached
the
state
championships
are
split
into two
three-team
brackets,
with the
three
teams in
both
brackets
playing
each
other
once.
The
winners
of each
bracket
will
play for
the
state
championship
on
Saturday
at noon,
while
the two
second
place
teams
from
each
bracket
play for
third
place at
9:00
a.m. on
Saturday.
If two
of the
teams
have the
same
record
in
bracket
play, a
tie-breaker
is being
set up
to
determine
who
advances.
Although
the
Falcons
have not
faced
either
team in
their
bracket,
head
coach
Sergio
Macias
is
excited
about
his
team's
chances.
"I think
the
pressure
is off
us going
into the
state
tournament
because
it's the
first
time we
are
going.
Everyone
is
beatable
and I
think it
benefits
us to
play
both
games in
the same
day.
This
way, we
can give
it our
all in
one day
and if
we
advance,
then we
will get
an
entire day
to
prepare."
Cerritos
has
faced
two of
the
three
teams in
the
other
bracket
and went
2-1
against
#2-seeded
Long
Beach
City
College
(24-6)
and lost
a 6-5
game to
the
North's
#1-seed,
Santa
Rosa
College
(22-5).
Sierra
College
(22-6)
is the
other
team in
Bracket
A.
