The
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team
took the
first
step
towards
winning
their
first
state
championship,
as they
defeated
American
River
College,
8-4 this
morning in
their
first of
two
games on
Thursday
at
Merced
College.
The
Falcons,
(29-3),
ranked
#2 in
the
state,
were
seeded
#3 from
the
South
and will
now face
Riverside
Community
College,
the
defending
state
champion
and
top-ranked
team in
the
state, at
4:30
p.m. The
winners
of the
two
brackets
will
advance
to the
state
championship
game on
Saturday
at noon,
while
the
second
place
team
from
each
bracket
will
play for
third
place.
Earlier
in the
season,
Cerritos
dropped
a 12-11
game to
Riverside
in the
first
game of
the
Golden
West
Tournament.
In the
win over
American
River,
Cerritos
broke a
2-2 tie
after
the
first
quarter
by
scoring
four
unanswered
goals in
the
second
quarter
to take
a 6-2
lead
into
halftime.
Both
teams
traded
single
goals in
the
third
and
fourth
quarters,
giving
the
Falcons
a win in
their
first
appearance
in the
state
championships.
Freshman
Natalie
Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
led the
team
with
three
goals,
with
five
others
scoring
once.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Miranda
Bakke
(Gahr
HS)
turned
away six
shots in
the
victory.
