Not only did their 13-7 victory over cross-town rival Long Beach City College lock down the South Coast Conference regular season championship, the Cerritos College women's water polo team also extended their winning streak to 17 games. Ranked #2 in the state, the Falcons (22-2 overall, 4-0 SCC) now have the inside track at #1 seed entering the conference tournament and a first round bye. The team will now enter the Long Beach City Tournament over the weekend. A conference championship would also be the second for fourth-year head coach Sergio Macias, who won the title in 2006.
Cerritos jumped out to 3-0 and 4-2 leads in the second quarter, as the Vikings attempted to chip away at the lead. With the score 4-3 at halftime, sophomore Stephanie Rosero (Downey HS) scored on a lob shot that went over the outstretched hands of the Viking goalkeeper.
Just a minute later, freshmen Adriana Rodriguez (El Rancho HS) stole the ball and fed sophomore Hannah Llamas (Gahr HS), who scored to give the Falcons a 6-3 lead. Long Beach City was unable to recover from the deficit and the Falcons pulled away for the win. Freshman Sabrina Boling (El Rancho HS) scored twice in the fourth quarter to account for her two tallies in the game.
Rodriguez led the team with three goals, while Boling, Llamas, Rosero and sophomore Karen Aguirre (Downey HS) each added two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Miranda Bakke (Gahr HS) was solid, as she made eight saves in the win.
