Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team
seemed
to be in
mid-season
form in
their
first
tournament
of the
year, as
they
swept
through
all four
of their
opponents
to go
undefeated
at the
Cuesta
Tournament.
The
Falcons
(4-0)
shutout
Santa
Monica
College
(17-0)
and
defeated
Foothill
College
(15-1)
the
first
day and
came
back to
post
wins
over San
Joaquin
Delta
College
(13-8)
and
Cuesta
College
(18-6).
Cerritos
will now
enter
the
Chaffey
Tournament
this
weekend
and get
their
first
look
at their
conference
rival.
In their
first
game
against
the
Corsairs,
the
Falcons
posted
their
fourth
shutout
in
school
history,
with
freshman
goalkeeper
Miranda
Bakke
(Gahr
HS)
picking
up the
win
after
making
just one
save.
The duo
of
freshmen
Nicole
Tuning
(Hacienda
Heights
Wilson
HS)
and
Adriana
Rodriguez
(El
Rancho
HS)
each
scored
four
times to
lead
Cerritos,
while
the
defense
accounted
for 25
steals.
Sophomore
All-American
Stephanie
Rosero
(Downey
HS)
led the
team
with
five
steals.
Rosero
paced
the team
against
Foothill
with
four
goals
and four
steals,
with freshman
Natalie
Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
and
sophomore
Hannas
Llamas
(Gahr
HS)
each
adding
three
scores.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Mandy
Perez
(Montebello
HS)
made
four
blocks,
with
Bakke
posting
one.
The
offense
continued
to
attack
their
opponents,
as the
Falcons
registered
35 shots
on goal
against
San
Joaquin
Delta,
although
they
trailed
7-6
early in
the
fourth
period.
But
consecutive
goals by
Rosero,
Rodriguez
and
Peng
gave the
team a
9-7 lead
with
4:48
remaining.
Then,
with
3:37
left,
sophomore
Denise
Vega
(Montebello
HS)
put the
team up
10-7
before
Delta
scored
to get
back to
within
two
goals.
In the
last
2:20,
Cerritos
scored
three
more
times to
put the
game
away, as
Llamas,
Vega and
Rodriguez
secured
the win.
Rosero
led the
team
with
four
goals,
while
Rodriguez
added
three.
In the
final
game of
the
tournament,
freshman
Karen
Aguirre
(Downey
HS)
exploded
for five
goals,
with
Vega and
freshman
Sabrina
Boling
(El
Rancho
HS)
each
scored
three
times.
Bakke
turned
away six
shots,
while
the
Falcons
opened a
6-2 lead
after
the
first
period
and led
11-3 at
halftime.
