Facing
defending
state
champion
Riverside
College
in the
first
game of
the
Chaffey
Tournament
over the
weekend
gave the
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team an
idea of
what
kind of
team
that
have
this
season.
Last
week,
the
Falcons
swept
through
all four
teams at
the
Cuesta
Tournament.
But
against
the
Tigers,
Cerritos
came
within
the
final
minute
of
pulling
the
upset,
but
suffered
a 12-11
loss.
The
Falcons
went on
to win
two of
their
final
three
games
and are
now 6-2
on the
year.
They
will
open
South
Coast
Conference
play
this
Wednesday
at 4:15
p.m.
when
they
host El
Camino
College.
Following
their
loss to
Riverside,
the
Falcons
defeated
Orange
Coast
College,
10-2 on
the
first
day. On
the
second
day,
they
dropped
a 6-5
decision
to Santa
Rosa
College
before
closing
out the
tournament
with a
12-4
victory
over
Santa
Ana
College.
Early in
the
fourth
period
against
Riverside,
Cerritos
held a
10-8
lead
after
sophomore
Stephanie
Rosero
(Downey
HS)
and
freshman
Adriana
Rodriguez
(El
Rancho
HS)
each
scored
goals.
But the
Tigers
scored
three in
a row to
take an
11-10
lead
before
freshman
Sabrina
Boling
(El
Rancho
HS)
tied the
game at
11-11
with
2:29
remaining.
Riverside
ended up
scoring
the
eventual
game-winning
goal
with
1:22
left in
the
match.
Rosero
led the
team
with
five
goals,
while
Rodriguez
and
freshman
Natalie
Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
each
scored
twice.
Balance
was the
key to
the
team's
win over
Orange
Coast,
as Peng
led the
way with
three
goals
and
three
steals,
while
Boling
added
two with
five
others
scoring
once.
Cerritos
jumped
out to a
6-0 lead
at the
half, with
freshman
goalkeeper
Miranda
Bakke
(Gahr
HS)
finishing
with six
saves.
Against
Santa
Rosa,
the
Falcons
trailed
3-1
after
the
first
period,
but got
to
within
3-2
after a
Peng
goal
with
5:10
remaining
in the
second.
The team
trailed
5-2
midway
through
the
third
period
before
Rosero
scored
twice
and
sophomore
Angela
Chiaromonte
(Schurr
HS)
got the
team to
within
6-5 on a
goal
with :19
seconds
left in
the
third.
Neither
team
would be
able to
score in
the
fourth,
as both
defenses
tightened
up.
Cerritos
did have
a 6-on-5
advantage
early in
the
fourth
period,
but
could
not
capitalize.
A trio
of
players
accounted
for two
goals
each in
the
final
game of
the
tournament,
with
freshman
Andrea
Garcia
(Gahr
HS)
also
posting
a
season-high
six
steals
to go
with her
two
goals.
Rosero
and
freshman
Nicole
Tuning
(Hacienda
Heights
Wilson
HS)
also had
two
goals,
as the
team
opened
up an
8-1 lead
before
coasting
with the
win.
