For the
second
time
this
year,
the
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team
defeated
all four
opponents
to win a
tournament.
At the
start of
the
year,
the
Falcons
swept
through
the
Cuesta
Tournament
and
matched
that
over the
weekend
at the
San
Diego
Mesa
Tournament.
Cerritos
(12-2)
recorded
wins
over
Southwestern
College
(20-6),
Ventura
College
(11-8),
Grossmont
College
(17-8)
and
finished
with a
12-8
triumph
over the
host
Olympians.
Next up
for the
team is
a South
Coast
Conference
home
game at
4:15
p.m. on
Wednesday
against
Mt. San
Antonio
College.
After a
slow
first
quarter
against
Southwestern,
where
they led
3-2, the
Falcons
took a
7-2 lead
into
halftime
after
four
different
players
scored.
By the
end of
the
game, 11
different
players
had
accounted
for at
least
one
goal,
with
sophomore
All-American
Stephanie
Rosero
(Downey
HS)
leading
the way
with
five
goals. A
quintet
of
players
each
scored
twice,
led by
freshman
Natalie
Peng
(Cerritos
HS),
who also
contributed
three
assists.
Also
scoring
twice
were
sophomore
Angela
Chiaromonte
(Schurr
HS),
as well
as
freshmen
Melinda
Guevara
(Cerritos
HS),
Karen
Aguirre
(Downey
HS)
and
Adriana
Rodriguez
(El
Rancho
HS).
Freshman
goalkeeper
Mandy
Perez
(Montebello
HS)
played
exceptionally
well and
finished
with
nine
saves.
In the
win over
Ventura,
Rosero
and
Rodriguez
each
scored
three
times,
with
Rodriguez
scoring
twice in
the
second
quarter
that
helped
the
Falcons
open up
a 6-4
lead by
halftime.
Sophomore
Yvonne
Ruvalcaba
(Montebello
HS)
and Peng
opened
the
third
quarter
by
scoring
consecutive
goals
for an
8-4 lead
before
the
Pirates
eventually
closed
the gap
to an
8-7
score.
Rosero
then
scored
twice,
with
sophomore
Denise
Vega
(Montebello
HS)
also
adding a
goal in
the
fourth
quarter
to
secure
the
victory.
Both
Perez
and
freshman
Miranda
Bakke
(Gahr
HS)
allowed
four
goals in
the
cage,
but were
helped
by solid
defense,
as the
Falcons
posted
12
steals.
Another
close
start to
a game
resulted
in a big
win for
Cerritos.
Although
they
opened a
5-1 lead
to their
game
against
Grossmont,
the
Griffins
got as
close as
a 6-4
score in
the
second
quarter.
That's
where
Rosero
(five
goals),
Rodriguez
(three
goals)
and
freshman
Sabrina
Boling
(El
Rancho
HS),
who also
scored
three
times,
came on
strong
to put
the game
out of
reach.
Their
quick-strike
offense,
coupled
with a
season-high
six
steals
from
Ruvalcaba
led the
way.
The
tournament
finished
with the
Falcons
holding
off a
late
surge
from San
Diego
Mesa.
After
jumping
out to a
6-2
lead,
the
Olympians
fought
to stay
close
until
Cerritos
finished
them off
with
more
solid
defense.
In
addition
to her
team-high
four
goals,
Rodriguez
also
posted
three
steals,
while
Rosero
(three
goals,
four
steals)
and
Ruvalcaba
(three
steals)
also
helped
turn
away SD
Mesa.
Chiaromonte
and Peng
each
scored
twice
for the
Falcons,
while
Perez
made two
saves
and had
a steal
of her
own.
