The
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team
defeated
four
opponents
over the
weekend
at the
San
Diego
Mesa
Tournament
to claim
the
championship.
The
Falcons
(14-1)
posted
wins
over
Southwestern
College
(14-2),
Ventura
College
(17-4),
Chaffey
College
(13-6)
and the
host
Olympians,
15-8 to
run
their
winning
streak
to seven
matches
in a
row. The
team
will now
travel
to Mt.
San
Antonio
College
on
Wednesday
for a
3:00
p.m.
South
Coast
Conference
match.
In the
first
win of
the
tournament,
freshman
Rachel Gabayeron
(Cerritos
HS)
led a
balanced
scoring
attack
with
four
goals,
as the
Falcons
attacked
the net
from the
outset
of the
game. As
a team,
Cerritos
took 38
shots on
goal and
broke
open a
1-1
first
quarter
tie by
outscoring
the
Jaguars
6-1 in
the
second
quarter.
Sophomore
Natalie Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
added
three
goals
and five
steals,
while
freshman
Sharon Pedregon
(El
Rancho
HS)
also had
five
steals
and led
the team
with
four
assists.
Sophomore
goalkeeper
Miranda Bakke
(Gahr
HS)
made
five
saves,
while
freshman
Melissa Cedarholm
(Warren
HS)
finished
up
with three
saves.
Against
Ventura,
the
Falcons
started
the
match
the same
way,
leading
only 3-1
after
the
first
period,
but
outscored
the
Pirates
7-0 in
the
second
to put
the
match
out of
reach. Gabayeron
continued
her
torrid
scoring
pace,
leading
the team
with
five
goals on
five
shots,
while Pedregon
chipped
in with
four
goals,
three
assists
and
three
steals.
It was
another
balanced
attack,
with
nine
different
players
scoring,
while Bakke
and Cedarholm
combined
for 11
saves.
On the
second
day,
Cerritos
jumped
out to a
10-1
halftime
lead
over
Chaffey,
a
conference
opponent,
with
sophomore
Andrea
Garcia
(Gahr
HS)
scoring
three
times to
lead the
team. Gabayeron
and
Pedregon
both
scored
twice,
while
freshman Crystle Casarez
(Montebello
HS)
posted
three
steals.
The
tournament
was
clinched
for the
Falcons
when
they
jumped
out to a
7-0 lead
in the
first
quarter
against
San
Diego
Mesa,
with
Gabayeron
recording
her
third
five-goal
game to
go along
with
three
steals.
The
quartet
of
Casarez,
Peng,
sophomore
Nicole
Tuning
(Los
Altos HS)
and
freshman Mehgan Carbajal
(El
Rancho
HS)
all
scoring
twice. Bakke
and Cedarholm
were
once
again
solid in
goal and
combined
for
eight
saves.
