straight
wins at
the
Pasadena
City
Tournament
over the
weekend,
the
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team won
their
third
tournament
of the
season
and
extended
their
winning
streak
to 12
matches
in a
row. The
Falcons,
the
defending
state
champions,
are now
19-1 on
the year
and will
resume
South
Coast
Conference
action
on
Wednesday
at 3:00
p.m.
when
they
host Los
Angeles
Trade-Tech
College.
Cerritos
opened
the
tournament
by
defeating
Diablo
Valley
College,
13-3 and
followed
that
with
victories
over
Citrus
College
(12-2), Cuesta
College
(20-7)
and then
secured
the
tournament
title
with a
9-6 win
over
Orange
Coast
College.
In the
final
game
against
Orange
Coast,
the
Falcons
held off
the
Pirates
after
opening
a 7-4
lead in
the
third
quarter.
Orange
Coast
scored
the next
two
goals
before
freshman
Sharon Pedregon
(El
Rancho
HS) scored
with
3:32
left in
the
fourth
quarter
and
sophomore
Natalie Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
added an
insurance
goal
with
2:24
remaining
to seal
the
victory.
Peng, Pedregon
and
freshman
Crystle Casarez
(Montebello
HS)
each
scored
twice
for
Cerritos,
while
freshman
Rachel Gabayeron
(Cerritos
HS)
paced
the team
with
four
steals.
The goalkeeping
duo of Miranda Bakke
(Gahr
HS) and
Melissa Cedarholm
(Warren
HS)
combined
for six
saves.
The
tournament
opened
with the
Falcons
jumping
out to a
10-2
halftime
lead
over
Diablo
Valley,
as Pedregon
and Peng
each
scored
three
times,
while
freshman
Jesse Ku
(Cerritos
HS)
led the
team
with
five
steals.
As a
team,
Cerritos
recorded
20
steals
with Cedarholm
contributing
three
from the
net and
shared
time
with
freshman
Ashley Arambula
(Kennedy
HS).
It was Peng's
four
goals
and
single
goals
from
eight
other
players
that led
Cerritos
to their
win over
Citrus.
The
Falcons
scored
the
first 12
goals of
the
game,
while Cedarholm
made
seven
saves.
Against
Cuesta,
a trio
of
players
scored
four
times,
including
Gabayeron,
sophomore
Angie
Silva
(Pioneer
HS)
and
freshman Jenel
Lopez
(La
Serna HS).
Although
they
scored
20
times,
the
Falcons
held off
an
attacking
Cougars
team, as
they
required Bakke
and Cedarholm
to make
a
combined
13
saves.
Freshman Mehgan Carbajal
(El
Rancho
HS)
added
thee
goals
and a
team-high
four
steals,
while Gabayeron
also
contributed
three
steals.
