The
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team,
coming
off
their
first
state
championship
in
school
history,
opened
the 2009
season
by
sweeping
four
opponents
at the
Central
Coast
Tournament
in Cuesta
over the
weekend.
The
Falcons
(4-0)
were
crowned
the
champions
of the
tournament
and had
just one
game
where
they
were
challenged.
After
opening
with a
19-1 win
over
Santa
Monica
College,
they
followed
that
with a
16-11
victory
over
Foothill
College.
On the
second
day,
Cerritos
disposed
of both
Cabrillo
College
(18-1)
and the
host
Cougars
by a
score of
22-8.
The team
will now
open
South
Coast
Conference
play on
Wednesday
when
they
travel
to Rio
Hondo
College
for a
3:00
p.m.
match.
Freshman
Amber
Smith
(Warren
HS)
led a
balance
scoring
attack
in the
opening
game, as
she
scored
four
times,
while
recording
a
team-high
five
steals.
In the
match,
11
different
players
scored
at least
one
goal,
while 12
had at
least
one
steal.
Sophomore
Nicole
Tuning
(Los
Altos HS)
contributed
a trio
of
goals,
while Mehgan Carbajal
(El
Rancho
HS)
dished
off
three
assists.
The
goalkeeping
duo of
sophomore
Miranda Bakke
(Gahr
HS)
and
freshman
Ashley Arambula
(Kennedy
HS)
combined
to make
five
saves.
Freshman
Georgiana
Bray
(Whittier
HS)
helped
break a
5-5
halftime
tie
against
Foothill,
as the
Falcons
outscored
the
Owls,
7-2 in
the
third
quarter.
Bray led
the team
with six
goals,
while
sophomore
Natalie Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
and
freshman
Raquel Gabayeron
(Cerritos
HS)
both
added
three
goals.
Defense
was once
again a
key to
the
victory, as
the team
finished
with 14
steals,
led by
Peng,
who had
four and
freshman Crystle Casarez
(Montebello
HS),
who
contributed
three.
Freshman
Sharon Pedregon
(El
Rancho
HS)
added
five
assists,
with Bakke
making
four
saves.
Cerritos
opened
up a
13-0
lead
against
Cabrillo
in the
first
game of
the
second
day
before
concluding
with an
18-1
win.
Smith
led the
way with
five
goals,
followed
by
Tuning's
four.
The trio
of Arambula
(three
saves),
freshman
Jessie
Ku
(Cerritos
HS)
and
Smith
all had
three
steals.
Goals
came in
bunches
against
Cuesta,
as they
team put
11 in
the net
in the
second
quarter
to take
an 18-4
lead at
halftime. Peng
and Bray
led
another
balanced
scoring
attack,
as each
scored
four
times,
while 11
players
scored. Pedregon
and
sophomore
Kristina Zalewski
(Warren
HS)
added
three
goals,
with Gabayeron
finishing
with
three
assists.
