The
Cerritos
College
women's
water
polo
team
opened
South
Coast
Conference
on
Wednesday
with a
convincing
19-2 win
at Rio
Hondo
College.
The
Falcons,
the
defending
state
champions,
improved
to 5-0
on the
year.
They
will now
enter
the
Chaffey
Tournament,
which
will
take
place
this
Friday
and
Saturday.
With
such a
lopsided
win, the
scoring
was
extremely
balanced,
as 13
different
players
scored,
with
nobody
accounting
for more
than two
goals.
Although
it was a
1-1 game
early in
the
first
quarter,
Cerritos
went on
to score
18 straight
goals
before
the
Roadrunners
picked
up their
second
goal as
time
expired
in the
game.
On the
day, the
Falcons
scored
their 19
goals
while
taking
only 22
shots.
There
were six
different
players
that
scored a
pair of
goals
for
Cerritos,
while
freshman Mehgan Carbajal
(El
Rancho
HS)
led the
team
with
three
assists.
In the
first
quarter,
sophomores
Kristen
Rivas
(Montebello
HS),
Melinda
Guevara
(Cerritos
HS)
and
Natalie Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
accounted
for
their
two
goals in
the
game.
Joining
them
were
sophomore
Nicole
Tuning
(Los
Altos HS),
along
with
freshmen
Amber
Smith
(Warren
HS)
and Jenel
Lopez
(La
Serna HS),
who also
scored
twice.
Freshman
Melissa Cedarholm
(Warren
HS)
saw her
first
action
of the
season
in goal
and made
six
saves in
the
game. On
defense,
Guevara
and
sophomore
Angie
Silva
(Pioneer
HS)
led the
way with
two
steals.
