This Week's Sports Schedule

09.16.09 - FALCONS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY WITH A WIN
The Cerritos College women's water polo team opened South Coast Conference on Wednesday with a convincing 19-2 win at Rio Hondo College. The Falcons, the defending state champions, improved to 5-0 on the year. They will now enter the Chaffey Tournament, which will take place this Friday and Saturday.

With such a lopsided win, the scoring was extremely balanced, as 13 different players scored, with nobody accounting for more than two goals. Although it was a 1-1 game early in the first quarter, Cerritos went on to score 18 straight goals before the Roadrunners picked up their second goal as time expired in the game.

On the day, the Falcons scored their 19 goals while taking only 22 shots. There were six different players that scored a pair of goals for Cerritos, while freshman Mehgan Carbajal (El Rancho HS) led the team with three assists. In the first quarter, sophomores Kristen Rivas (Montebello HS), Melinda Guevara (Cerritos HS) and Natalie Peng (Cerritos HS) accounted for their two goals in the game. Joining them were sophomore Nicole Tuning (Los Altos HS), along with freshmen Amber Smith (Warren HS) and Jenel Lopez (La Serna HS), who also scored twice.

Freshman Melissa Cedarholm (Warren HS) saw her first action of the season in goal and made six saves in the game. On defense, Guevara and sophomore Angie Silva (Pioneer HS) led the way with two steals.
