Many
believe
that
last
year's
women's
water
polo
state
tournament
semi-final
game
between
Cerritos
College
and
Riverside
College
was
worthy
of a
state
championship
game.
The
Falcons,
who
pulled
out a
12-11
victory
and went
on to
win
their
first
state
championship
in
school
history,
squared
off against
the
Tigers
for the
first
time
since
that
contest.
In the
third
game of
the
Chaffey
Tournament
on
Saturday,
the
outcome
was not
what
Cerritos
had
hoped,
as they
dropped
a 7-6
decision
in a
game
that had
the
intensity
of a
state
tournament
match.
However,
the
Falcons
win did
their
other
three
games
and are
now 8-1
on the
year.
The team
will now
travel
to El
Camino
College
for a
3:15
p.m.
South
Coast
Conference
match on
Wednesday.
Prior to
their
loss to
the
Tigers,
the
Falcons
posted
wins
over
Santa
Rosa
College
(14-5),
Fresno
City
College
(17-3)
and
American
River
College
(14-2).
In the
loss to
Riverside,
the
teams
traded
goals
until it
was 4-4
and then
the
Tigers
went on
to score
three unanswered
goals to
take a
7-4 lead
at the
end of
the
third
quarter.
However,
the
Falcons
fought
back on
goals by
sophomore
Natalie Peng
(Cerritos
HS)
at 6:15
and then
by
freshman
Georgiana
Bray
(Whittier
HS)
with
4:13
remaining
in the
fourth
quarter. Peng
then
enticed
a
Riverside
player
to earn
an
ejection
with
3:13
left,
but
Cerritos
could
not
capitalize
and the
Tigers
held on
for the
win.
Peng led
the team
with
four
goals
and
added
two
steals,
with
freshman
Sharon Pedregon
(El
Rancho
HS)
posting
three
steals.
Bray and
freshman
Raquel Gabayeron
(Cerritos
HS)
scoring
the
other
two
goals
for the
Falcons,
while
sophomore
goalkeeper
Miranda Bakke
(Gahr
HS)
turned
away
eight
shots.
Cerritos
opened
the
tournament
with
their
win over
Santa
Rosa,
with Peng
and
sophomore
Angie
Silva
(Pioneer
HS)
each
scoring
a
team-high
four
goals,
while
Silva
also
posted
four
steals.
The
Falcons
broke
open a
close
5-4 game
by
scoring
nine of
the
game's
final 10
goals,
while Bakke
finished
with 11
saves.
Against
Fresno
City,
the
outcome
was
never in
doubt,
as the
team
jumped
out to a
9-2
halftime
lead and
never
looked
back. Of
the 13
players
that
scored
at least
one
goal,
sophomore
Nicole
Tuning
(Los
Altos HS)
led the
team
with
three
goals,
while
the
Falcons
recorded
19
steals.
Coming
off the
loss to
the
Tigers,
Cerritos
went on
an
offensive
surge
and led
American
River
9-1 at
halftime
and 12-1
after
the
third
quarter.
Tuning
and Peng
each
scored
three
goals,
while
five
players
each
posted
two
steals,
with
Gabayeron, Pedregon
and Bray
each contributing
a goal. Bakke
made
five
stops,
with
freshman
Melissa Cedarholm
(Warren
HS)
coming
on to
make one
save.
