12.10.11 - Falcons finish 11th at State
Championships
In
a season where the Cerritos College wrestling team was
ranked as high as #3 in the state, the year concluded
with the squad placing 11th at the California Community
College Athletic Association State Championships at
Santa Rosa College on Saturday. The Falcons, whose
highest individual finisher was fourth place, tied with
East Los Angeles College with 37 team points, with the
top three teams all coming from Northern California.
Fresno City College easily won their second straight

12.04.11 - Eight advance to state with team
taking third place
Although they struggled when it came to dual matches,
the Cerritos College wrestling team finally put together
all of their top competitors in each of their respective
weights and the result was a strong third place finish
at the Southern California Regional Championships at
Palomar College on Saturday. The Falcons, who didn't
have any individual champions, compiled 96 team points
and was edged by Mt. San Antonio College (100 team
points) and West Hills-Lemoore College, who had 97.5
points. Eight of the 10 wrestlers finished in the top
six to advance to the California Community College
Athletic Association State Championships, which will be
held at Santa Rosa Junior College next Friday and

11.16.11 - Cerritos loses second straight
conference match
The Cerritos College wrestling team dropped their second
straight Southwest Conference match, as they were
defeated by host Mt. San Antonio College, 29-7 on
Wednesday. The loss drops the Falcons, the state's
#3-ranked team, to 1-3 in conference play. They will
compete in the East Los Angeles Quad on Saturday in
their fine tune-up for the Southern California regional
Tournament, which will take place on December 3 at

11.09.11 - Falcons defeated by Rio Hondo in
conference action
As
the #3-ranked team in the state, the Cerritos College
wrestling team has had their troubles in Southwest
Conference action this season, as they have suffered
defeats to #7 Palomar College in their opener, while
#4-ranked Rio Hondo College handed them a 27-19 setback
on Wednesday. The Falcons (6-5, 1-2) have one more
conference match remaining, as they will travel to
#5-ranked Mt. San Antonio College for a 7:00 p.m. match

11.05.11 - Team places sixth at Lassen
Tournament
As
the Cerritos College wrestling team continues to gear up
for the Southern California Regional Tournament next
month, they sent a limited squad to the Lassen
Tournament in Reno, NV to help give some of their
starters a break. The Falcons wound up finishing in
sixth place out of the 15 schools that competed and
amassed 80 team points. Southwest Conference opponent
Rio Hondo College came in third place with 123.5 team
points, while Fresno City College won the tournament
with 190.5 team points. Cerritos will now face the
Roadrunners on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in an important

11.02.11 - Cerritos records big conference
win
After opening
Southwest Conference action with a 31-6 loss to Palomar
College last week, the Cerritos College wrestling team
rebounded with a 31-12 win over #9-ranked Santa Ana
College at Excelsior HS on Wednesday night. The Falcons
(6-4, 1-1), ranked #3 in the state, will now compete in
the Lassen Tournament in Reno, NV on Saturday.
Cerritos opened the match by winning the first five
matches, which also included a forfeit win at 141
pounds. At 125 pounds, sophomore
Jake
Harrison (West Torrance HS),
ranked #1 in the state, held off a late surge by
Sergio Sanchez and posted an 8-6 win. Harrison led
2-0 after the second period and posted a pair of
reversals that Sanchez could not recover from, with
Harrison securing the win with a riding time point.
Freshman
Jacob Barberena (Downey HS)
was leading 10-2 against Brandon Brown at 133 pounds
before pinning him in 4:30 at 133 pounds. The
forfeit for freshman
Anthony Kaouri (Mayfair HS)

10.26.11 - Falcons drop conference opener
With
all five teams in the Southwest Conference ranked in the
Top 10 in the state, each week the Cerritos College
wrestling team will be in for a tough match. The start
of conference action got underway Wednesday night, and
the Falcons, ranked #3 in the state, dropped a 31-6
decision to #7-ranked Palomar College. Cerritos will now
host #9 ranked Santa Ana College at 7:00 p.m. on
Wednesday at Excelsior HS.
After the first four matches, the Falcons trailed only
7-6, but saw the Comets win the final six weights to
claim the victory. In two of those matches, Cerritos
dropped 3-1 decisions, with freshman
Ramon
Estrada (Perris HS) losing at 157 pounds,
as did freshman
Keith Nieves
(Warren HS) at 184 pounds. Estrada, who's ranked
#4 at 157 pounds, saw #6-ranked Tim Randle score a late
takedown for the victory. For Nieves, who is ranked #5
in the state, he suffered the same fate against
#8-ranked Matt Lewlellen...[more]
10.22.11 - Pair of third place finishes helps
team come in 4th place
Paced by a pair of third place finishes and two sixth
place finishes, the Cerritos College wrestling team came
in fourth place in the Meathead Invitational at Cuesta
College on Saturday. The Falcons, ranked #3 in the
state, concluded with 65.5 team points, while top-ranked
Fresno City won the invitational with 181 team points.
On Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., Cerritos will host #7-ranked
Palomar College in their Southwest Conference opener at
Excelsior HS. The college is using the school as their

10.14.11 - Cerritos misses out on Regional
Dual championship
Each year, the Cerritos College wrestling team is in
contention for the Southern Regional Dual championship
and each year they seem to be one step away from the
title. Prior to winning the title last year, the Falcons
came in second place four years in a row, and this year
appeared to be in contention once again after a pair of
wins to open the tournament. They defeated West Hills
College (23-16) and Rio Hondo College (43-9), but were
defeated by Santa Ana College, 27-14 in the semi-finals.
Cerritos followed that loss with a 33-18 win over Cuesta
College to come in third place and improved their record
to 5-3 on the year. The team will now travel to Cuesta
to compete in the Meathead Invitational on Saturday...[more]
10.08.11 - Falcons come in fourth place at
Modesto
For the third week in a row, a Cerritos College
125-pound wrestler has won a tournament title. First, it
was freshman
Damien Gomez
(Warren HS), who won the West Hills Tournament,
while sophomore
Jake
Harrison (West Torrance HS) has won the
last two tournaments. On Saturday, Harrison defeated
four opponents to win the Modesto Invitational and is
now ranked #1 in the state at that weight. As a team,
the Falcons came in fourth place with 95.5 team points.
The team will now compete in the Southern Regional Duals

10.01.11 - Team has a trio of finalists at
Santa Ana Tournament
The Cerritos College wrestling team finished a distant
fifth place at the Santa Ana Tournament on Saturday, but
had one individual champion and a pair that reached the
finals. The Falcons took fifth place with their starters
with 69.5 team points, while their second team finished
in sixth place with 52 team points. The team will now
travel north to the Modesto Tournament on Saturday...[more]
09.24.11 - Cerritos places second at West
Hills Tournament
Paced by a pair of individual weight champions, the
Cerritos College wrestling team took second place in
their first tournament of the season. The Falcons, who
had nine wrestlers place in the top four, finished with
94.5 team points and trailed only Fresno City College,
who had 170 team points and five individual weight
champions. Cerritos will look to improve on their finish
this Saturday when they compete in the Santa Ana

09.17.11 - Falcons open season by splitting
four matches
In
their first competition of the season, the Cerritos
College wrestling team split their four matches at the
Mt. San Antonio Duals on Saturday. The Falcons, who came
in second place at the State Championships last season,
opened with a 27-13 loss to Palomar College and then
followed that with a thrilling 22-18 victory over West
Hills College. The day continued with a heart-breaking
19-17 loss to Mt. San Antonio College and concluded with
a convincing 38-12 win over East Los Angeles College.

scholarships
Two-time state heavyweight wrestling champion
Jose Lopez
(John Glenn HS), who finished his career as one
of only four Cerritos College wrestlers to win two state
titles, has transferred to Dickinson State (ND)
University. Sophomore Tilman
Tran (Loara HS), who qualified for the
state championships at 141 pounds but was defeated in
his first two matches, will be transferring to Embry

01.13.11 - Jose Lopez named state's Male
Athlete of the Month
To
cap off a historic career, Cerritos College wrestler
Jose
Lopez (John Glenn HS), who won
back-to-back state championships at 285 pounds, was
named the California Community College Athletic
Association (CCCAA) December Male Athlete of the Month.
Lopez, who earned a scholarship to continue wrestling at
Dickinson State (ND) University, became just the fourth
wrestler in school history to win consecutive state
championships.
Lopez, who posted a 33-1 record this season, defeated
Fresno City College's Luis Contreras, 4-0 in the state
championship match. Over the course of the season, Lopez
won the Southern California Championship, as well as the
West Hills, Santa Ana and Modesto Tournament
championships. His only setback of the season was a loss
to Levi Cooper of Arizona State University at the Embry
Riddle Tournament...[more]

The Cerritos College wrestling team may not have won the
California Community College Athletic Association State
Wrestling Championship at Victor Valley College on
Saturday night, but they did have two of their wrestlers
win individual state championships. The Falcons, who
finished with 125 team points, trailed only Fresno City
College, who had 185.5 team points, with four wrestlers
winning state championships.
Sophomore 285-pound
Jose Lopez (John Glenn HS) concluded his Falcon career with back-to-back state championships, marking just the fourth time in school history that feat has been accomplished. He joins Ron Kenworthy (1967-69), Antonio McKee (1988-89) and Hossin Oushani (1999-2000) who were two-time state champions. Freshman
Steven Cabanas (Canyon Springs HS) posted a 10-6 win at 125 pounds to win the state championship. The third Cerritos wrestler to reach the finals, freshman
Cody Bollinger (Sultana HS),
dropped a 10-2 decision to Eric Lopez of Victor Valley
College.
Lopez, who finished the season with a 33-1 record,
defeated Luis Contreras of Fresno City College, 4-0 in
the final match of the tournament. It was only a month
ago that Lopez, who will be competing for Dickinson
State (ND) University next season, pinned Contreras in
