The Cerritos College wrestling team
had eight of their 10 wrestlers finish in the top three
of the Southern California Regionals, held on campus in
The Aviary, with the other two placing fourth. The end
result was 158.5 team points and the Southern California
championship, which was one point better than South
Coast Conference rival Santa Ana College, who had 157.5
team points. All 10 wrestlers will advance to the state
championships, which will be held next Friday and
Saturday at Fresno City College. The top six from each
weight classification advanced to the state
championships.
Two of the Falcons won the
championship at their weight class, as sophomore
133-pound
Carlos
Alaniz (La
Mirada HS) defeated all three of his
opponents, including a pin of Santa Ana's Gabe Aguilar,
who was the top seed, in the championship match.
Sophomore 285-pound
Brandon Doran
(Yucca Valley HS)
was also the #2-seeded wrestler and posted three wins to
claim the championship. Against Bakersfield's Josh
Marquez in the finals, he held an 8-4 lead, but had to
hold off the state runner-up from last year in the final
seconds to post a 10-9 win. A small controversy at the
end of the match resulted when the Bakersfield coaches
claimed that Marquez had registered a take down before
the clock expired, but was overruled and Doran won the
title.
Also advancing to the finals were
freshman 125-pound
Jason
Carrillo (Torrance
HS) and
freshman 165-pound
Jack Porter (Desert
Vista, AZ HS), who were each defeated in the
championship match. Carrillo, seeded #2, pinned his
first opponent and then came away with an 11-6 win over
East Los Angeles College's Sammie Sanders to reach the
finals. In the match, he dropped a 12-6 decision to
Santa Ana's Ivan Sanchez. As for Porter, he was seeded
third and also pinned his first opponent before a 10-7
win over Michael Williams of Cuesta College put him in
the finals against Palomar's Glen Shaw. In that match,
Porter was defeated, 6-1.
Those who came in third place
included sophomore 141-pound Andrew Holmes, freshman
149-pound
Tony Ruiz
(Loara HS),
freshman 157-pound
Emilio
Chavez-Rojas (Sunny
Hills HS) and sophomore
184-pound
Louie Audelo
(California HS).
Both freshman 174-pound
Gene Choi (North
Torrance HS) and
freshman 197-pound
Al Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS)
came in fourth place, but were injured along the way,
which affected their performance.
As for Santa Ana, they had five
individual champions and a second place finisher, but
also had two fifth place and one seventh place finisher.
Cerritos is the only team from Southern California to
have advanced all 10 of their competitors, with Santa
Ana and Palomar both sending nine, while Bakersfield
advanced eight. |
