After the first
day of the California Community Colleges Commission on
Athletics Wrestling State Championships, host Fresno
City College leads with 73.5 points and is the only team
to have all 10 of their wrestlers advance to the second
day. The second day starts with consolation matches at
10:00 a.m., followed by the medal matches at 12:30 p.m.
The day is concluded with the championship finals, which
will start at 6:30 p.m.
Heading into the state championships,
only Fresno City and Cerritos College had 10 wrestlers
advance to the final weekend, but the Falcons had two of
their wrestlers eliminated. They currently rank third
with 62.5 team points, while defending state champion
Santa Ana College is in second place with 63.5 team
points.
With an opportunity to gain large
quantity of points, Santa Ana leads all schools with six
wrestlers who have advanced to the semi-finals, followed
by Fresno City and fifth place Palomar College with
five.

all won their matches today and have advanced to the
semi-finals.
Carrillo, the #2-rated wrestler from
Southern California, earned a bye in the first round and
then posted a close 10-9 decision over Rio Hondo
College's Rick Bernal. He will now square off against
Sierra College's Chauncey Phillips, who is the top-rated
wrestler from Northern California. Alaniz, ranked #1 in
the state, needed 4:44 to win his lone match by pinning
Marcelo Lopez of Rio Hondo College and will meet San
Joaquin Delta College's Armando Martinez in the
semi-finals. Audelo needed two wins to reach the
semi-finals and beat Matt McGarry of Shasta College,
15-3 and then posted a 9-8 win over Marques Gales of
Santa Rosa College. Audelo will face off against
defending state champion Tim Hawkins of Mt. San Antonio
College in the semi-finals. With the easiest day of the
entire tournament, top-seeded Doran needed just 13
seconds to pin Nick Thompson of Sacramento City and will
face Steve Franklin of Santa Rosa College.
Those who are still alive in the
consolation rounds include 141-pound
Andrew

Jacinto HS), who won his first match and
then was pinned in the second round by top-seeded Leland
Gridley of Sierra College; freshman
Tony Ruiz
(Loara HS)
at 149 pounds, who also won two of three matches on the
day; 165-pound freshman
Jack Porter
(Desert Vista, AZ
HS), the #2-seeded wrestler who lost his
first match of the day, 1-0 and fought back from an
injury to win his second match, 17-2; and 197-pound
freshman
Al Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS),
who also fought back from an injury to pin his opponent
after opening with a loss. Thos who were eliminated were
freshman 157-pound
Emilio Rojas-Chavez
(Sunny Hills HS)
and freshman 174-pound
Gene Choi
(North Torrance
