Sophomore
133-pound
Carlos
Alaniz (La
Mirada HS) became the 46th wrestler in
Cerritos College history to win an individual state
championship, as he recorded a 13-7 win over Gabe
Aguilar of Santa Ana College in the California Community
Colleges Commission on Athletics State Championship at
Fresno City College Saturday night.
As a team, the Falcons placed fourth with
101.5 team points, with the host Rams winning the team
championship with 135 points. Sierra College moved into
second place with 127 team points, while Santa Ana
finished in third with 126 points.
Alaniz was one of three Cerritos
wrestlers competing for a state championship. Freshman
125-pound
Jason
Carrillo (Torrance
HS) dropped a 12-4 decision to Ivan Sanchez
of Santa Ana, while sophomore heavyweight
Brandon Doran
(Yucca Valley HS)
was pinned in 4:34 by Sierra's Erik Nye, which turned
out to be the determining factor in the Wolverines
finishing in second place.
In the win by Alaniz, he fell behind 5-2
with 12 seconds left in the first period after a quick
takedown and a two-point near fall by Aguilar. However,
Alaniz responded quickly and recorded an escape and
takedown with five seconds left to get to a 5-5 tie.
After an early escape by Aguilar to start the second
period, Alaniz took over with two takedowns and led 9-7
heading into the final period, while also holding a 1:41
advantage in riding time. Alaniz accounted for all of
the scoring in the third period and gave Cerritos
another state champion.
Carrillo opened the championship matches
against Sanchez and fell behind 2-0 after one period and
5-1 after two periods. He was only able to record escape
points and went down to defeat. As for Doran, he was
looking to get an under hook against Nye, but fell
victim to two of his quick leg moves and was taken down
twice. On the second takedown, Nye was able to record
the pin and capture the title. |
