Although the final outcome of the
match had already been decided, the 197-pound match
between the Cerritos College and Mt. San Antonio College
wrestling teams was one that left the fans cheering. The
Falcons, ranked fifth in the state, defeated the
Mounties, 40-12 in their South Coast Conference match on
Wednesday to run their season record to 7-2-1, while
they are now 3-0 in the conference. They will now
compete in the Cuesta Tournament on Saturday.
At 197 pounds, Falcon freshman
Al Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS)
was squaring off against Ryan Silvera, who placed third
in the state championships last season and was ranked #2
in the state. Kinslow got Silvera down on his back early
on and recorded the upset win with a pin in 44 seconds,
which will help him move up the rankings in the state.
The other high-profile match was Mountie sophomore Tim
Hawkins, who won the state championship last year and
was rated #1 in the state at 184 pounds against Falcon
sophomore
Louie Audelo
(California HS),
who placed sixth in the state championship and was
ranked fourth in the state.
After falling behind 5-1 in the
second period, Audelo made his move with a takedown with
1:37 left in the period and looked to make an aggressive
move to put himself in a position to pin Hawkins.
However, Hawkins was able to counter the move and
recorded two points for a reversal and a 7-3 lead.
Audelo did earn two more escape points in the match and
was looking for a takedown in the third period, but was
held off by Hawkins, who posted an 8-5 win after earning
the riding time point.
The overall match was decided before
it started, as the Mounties forfeited four weights. In
matches that took place, sophomore 133-pound
Carlos
Alaniz (La
Mirada HS), the top-rated wrestler, pinned
Claudio Seanez in 4:35, while freshman
Tony Ruiz
(Loara HS)
posted a 13-1 win at 149 pounds. Sophomore
Andrew
Holmes (San
Jacinto HS), who was leading his 141-pound
match, 4-1 in the first period, was forced to forfeit
due to an injury. Freshman
Jack Porter
(Desert Vista, AZ
HS), ranked #4 in the state at 165 pounds,
dropped a close 7-4 match against sixth-rated Daniel
Garay and was as close as being down 5-4 early in the
third period. |
