As they move closer to the Southern
California Regionals, the Cerritos College wrestling
team is starting to make their move, as they placed
second in the San Francisco State Tournament this past
weekend. Facing mainly teams from Northern California,
the Falcons compiled 40 teams points and finished just
behind Fresno City College, the top-rated team in the
state, with 43 team points. This Friday, the team will
travel to Cal State Fullerton at 2:30 p.m. to square off
against Santa Ana College for the South Coast Conference
championship. Both teams are 4-0 in conference action
and tied in their only other match, the finals of the
Southern California Dual Meet Championships.
Cerritos had two individual champions
at the San Francisco State Tournament, as sophomore
184-pound Louie
Audelo
(California
HS) and
sophomore 285-pound
Brandon Doran
(Yucca
Valley HS)
defeated all of their opponents to win their respective
weight classifications. Both freshman 125-pound
Jason
Carrillo
(Torrance
HS)
and freshman 165-pound
Jack Porter
(Desert
Vista, AZ HS)
each advanced to the championship match, but were
defeated. There's a good chance the Falcons could have
won the tournament if freshman 197-pound
Al Kinslow
(Santa
Monica HS)
wasn't pulled from the tournament after getting injured
in his semi-final loss to eventual champion Jerred Dixon
of Sacramento City College.
Audelo entered the tournament as the
top seed and opened with a 12-4 win over Joey Hauss
(Moorpark) before a 24-8 victory over BJ Mosely
(Sacramento City) put him in the semi-finals. An 11-2
win over Marquz Gales (Santa Rosa) set up the
championship match against Shane Miller of Lassen, where
Audelo recorded a convincing 16-6 win. As for Doran, he
earned a bye in the first round as the top seed. He went
on to pin Tim Plummer of Sierra before a 15-5 win over
Steve Franklin of Santa Rosa put him in the finals.
Doran finished the tournament with a pin over Josh
Tedder of Lassen for the title.
As for Carrillo, who was seeded
third, he received a bye in the first round before a 7-5
win over Sergio Valdez of West Valley moved him into
the quarter-finals. After defeating Carl Riding (Victor
Valley), 6-4, be defeated second-seeded Rick Bernal of
Sierra to move to the championship match. Carrillo,
ranked seventh in the state, dropped a 10-7 decision to
Taylor McCorrison of Santa Rosa, who is rated third in
the state. Porter recorded a pin over Scott Rakowsky
(Chabot) and then a 12-3 win against Nate Moran (Fresno
City) to move into the semi-finals at 165 pounds. With
his 19-3 win against Tony Moser of Lassen in the
semi-finals, Porter moved to the championship match
against the state's #2-seeded Nick Bardsley of Fresno
City, where he dropped a 7-3 decision.
Others who wrestled well included
149-pound freshman
Tony Ruiz
(Loara
HS),
who lost in the semi-finals, but rebounded to win his
next two matches to come in third place and freshman
heavyweight
Chip Baker
(Paramount
HS),
who came in fourth place. After pinning his first two
opponents, Baker was defeated by Tedder, 4-1, while a
win would have put him in the finals against Doran.
Baker was defeated, 7-2 in the third place match by
Santa Rosa's Steve Franklin. |
