The Cerritos College wrestling team
saw some of their best performances of the season this
past weekend at the West Valley Tournament, which
includes some of the top teams in the state. The
Falcons, who had one individual champion, two third
place finishers, a fourth place and a sixth place, came
in fourth overall with 89.50 team points, and trailed
only Fresno City College (127.50 team points), Palomar
College (90.50) and Sierra College (89.50). Cerritos
will now start South Coast Conference action on
Wednesday night when they host East Los Angeles College
at 7:00 p.m.
Leading the way for the Falcons was
sophomore 133-pound
Carlos
Alaniz
(La
Mirada HS),
who is the top rated wrestler in the state and defeated
four opponents to win the tournament. He received a bye
in the first round before he defeated Marcelo Lopez of
Rio Hondo College, 12-5 and then pinned Chabot College's
James Durago in 2:33. That set up a semi-final match
against Gabe Aguilar of Santa Ana College, where Alaniz
posted an 8-6 victory. He did not have to face
Bakersfield College's Cody Gibson in the championship
match due to an injury and earned the default victory
for the title.
As for sophomore
Louis Audelo
(California
HS),
he was seeded second at 184 pounds and after a first
round bye, won his next two matches. In the semi-finals,
he was defeated by Fresno City College's Steven Urquizo,
4-1, but rebounded to defeat Mark Ryan of Santa Rosa
College, 3-2 and then pinned Sacramento City College's
Cory Compton in 5:22 to take third place. Sophomore
heavyweight
Brandon Doran
(Yucca
Valley HS)
won his second round match, 11-1 over San Joaquin Delta
College's Ivan Ramirez after a first round bye. But he
was then defeated by Victor Leyva of Fresno City
College, 5-3 which dropped him into the consolation
bracket. That didn't discourage Doran, who went on to
win four straight matches to earn third place, which
included a default victory over Leyva in the third place
match. Doran posted falls over Alex Arellano (Rio Hondo)
in 1:30 and Steve Franklin (Santa Rosa) in 1:15 before a
2-0 victory over Luis Leyva of Fresno City propelled him
to the third place match.
Coming in fourth place for Cerritos
was freshman 165-pound
Jack Porter
(Desert
Vista, AZ HS),
who earned a bye in the first round and followed that
win a 9-6 win over Nate Moran of Fresno City College.
That was followed be a tough 4-3 win against Daniel
Garay of Mt. San Antonio College. In the semi-finals,
Porter was pinned in 4:57 by Cuesta College's Michael
Williams, which was followed by a 3-1 victory over West
Valley College's Chris Minafo. In that match, Porter was
injured and was kept out of his third place match. At
141 pounds, sophomore
Andrew
Holmes
(San
Jacinto HS)
placed sixth after reaching one of the semi-final
matches. He earned a bye in the first round and then
posted wins over Eli Chaiden of West Valley College (pin
in 1:40) and a 14-7 decision over Travis McCrea of
Chabot College. But losses to eventual champion Jordan
Meckler of Modesto College (6-3), Santa Ana College's
Jose Serrato (6-1) and a loss to Jonathan Ronny of
Chabot College by pin in 2:33 dropped him into sixth
place.
The Falcons had 13 wrestlers compete
in the tournament. |
