The Cerritos College wrestling team
opened South Coast Conference action at home on
Wednesday night by defeating East Los Angeles College,
39-6 to run their season mark to 3-2, while they are 1-0
in conference play. The Falcons, ranked fifth in the
state, will now compete in the South Team Duals at
Moorpark College on Saturday.
With the match starting at 165 pounds
after the weight drawing, Cerritos benefited from three
East LA (3-3, 0-1) forfeits, as freshman 165-pounder
Jack Porter
(Desert Vista, AZ
HS), sophomore 184-pound
Louie Audelo
(California HS)
and freshman 197-pound
Ali Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS)
all earning wins. Sophomore heavyweight
Brandon Doran
(Yucca Valley HS),
ranked third in the state, needed just 37 seconds to pin
Miguel Ruano of East LA.
In the best match up of the night,
133-pound sophomore
Carlos
Alaniz (La
Mirada HS), who's ranked #1 in the state,
squared off against Ismael Armendariz, who placed fourth
in the state championships last season. After a close
first period, where Alaniz went up 4-1 after a takedown
with 38 seconds left in the first period, he had a
mental lapse and let Armendariz up before the buzzer,
which earned Armendariz an escape point. But, from that
point forward Alaniz was in control, going up 10-4 after
two periods and was leading, 17-6 when he finally pinned
him with only 39 seconds left in the match.
Freshman 125-pound
Jason
Carrillo (Torrance
HS) fought back from an early 4-1 deficit
against Sammy Saunders and recorded a reversal and
near-fall before the end of the first period and led,
7-4. After Saunders closed the gap to 8-6, Carrillo
earned the escape and then took him down twice before
riding him out the entire third period to earn a 13-8
victory. Sophomore
Andrew
Holmes (San
Jacinto HS) had his hands full in his
141-pound match, as recorded a first period takedown and
then rode out Hector Aguirre through the remainder of
the first period. Aguirre returned the favor in the
second period, with Holmes holding out the final two
minutes of the third period to collect a riding time
point and a 3-0 win. Freshman
Tony Ruiz
(Loara HS)
broke a close 5-3 match after two periods at 149 pounds
by earning an escape point to start the period and then
a takedown for stretch his lead to 8-3. After an escape
point by East LA's Jose Marroquin, Ruiz picked up two
more takedowns and eventually posted an 11-4 win.
On the losing end for the Falcons
were freshman 174-pound
Gene Choi
(North Torrance
HS), who lost, 6-1 and freshman 157-pound
Brandon Dompe
(California HS),
who was on the wrong side of a 7-0 score. |
