For the second year in a row, the
Cerritos College wrestling team came within a point of
competing for the State Dual Meet Championship. Oddly
enough, the same team kept them from advancing both
years, Santa Ana College. After the Falcons disposed of
Palomar College (28-12) and Moorpark College (30-12) at
the Southern California Dual Meet Championships at
Moorpark College on Saturday, they squared off against
the Dons, the defnedong state champion. The two teams
wrestled to a 20-20 tie, but the Dons were awarded the
win because they won more matches than the Falcons
(6-4), which is the first criteria for a tie-breaker.
Last year, Santa Ana was allowed to advance to the
finals after the two teams competed to a 25-25 draw
because Cerritos forfeited two of the matches.
This Wednesday, the Falcons will
travel to Palomar to take on the Comets in a South Coast
Conference match starting at 7:00 p.m.
In the finals against Santa Ana,
Cerritos held a slim 20-17 team lead heading into the
last match. Falcon sophomore heavyweight
Brandon Doran
(Yucca Valley HS)
and Tyler Porras of Santa Ana were tied, 3-3 after
regulation. The two had faced each other twice during
the season with Doran pinning Porras both times. Each
recorded an escape point to keep the match tied
at 4-4, but in the second overtime, Porras recorded a
takedown on a hard double-leg with 10 seconds left to
record the win. That put the teams at a 20-20 tie, but
the Dons earned the bid to compete for the state duals
championship because they won six of the 10 matches,
which is the first criteria for breaking ties.
Cerritos fought back from a 13-6
deficit halfway through the match, but freshman
165-pound
Jack Porter
(Desert Vista, AZ
HS) posted a 15-0 win, while sophomore
184-pound
Louis Audelo
(California HS)
needed a little over one period to register a 16-1
victory for a major decision. Freshman
Ali Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS)
put the team ahead after his 12-4 win at 197 pounds,
which set up the heavyweight match.
In the first match against conference
rival Palomar, the Falcons received three forfeit wins
and won the three lower weight matches to secure the
win, as Audelo (18-6), Kinslow (8-2) and Doran (2-0)
each picked up victories. Against Moorpark, Cerritos
lost two weights by pins, but won the others in
recording their 30-12 victory. Freshman
Jason
Carrillo (Torrance
HS) got things started at 125 pounds with a
13-7 win, while sophomore
Carlos
Alaniz (La
Mirada HS) earned a forfeit win at 133
pounds. Freshman
Gustavo Ruiz
(Loara HS)
picked up a 3-0 win at 149 pounds, while freshman
Emilio
Rojas-Chavez (Sunny
Hills HS) picked up an escape point in
overtime to register a 7-6 win at 157 pounds.
Porter followed with a solid 9-2 win
at 165 pounds, while freshman
Gene Choi
(North Torrance
HS) also won in overtime, as he recorded a
takedown for a 10-8 win at 174 pounds. Audelo (7-3) won
at 184 pounds, while Cerritos picked up a forfeit at
heavyweight. |
