The Cerritos College wrestling team
opened their 2006 season with virtually a new team to go
along with a new coaching staff. Taking over as the new
head coach is
Don Garriott,
who comes to the Falcon program from North Torrance
High, but is familiar with the community college system
from his time as an athlete at El Camino College.
Garriott inherits a team that has four returning state
place winners, including 125-pound Jimmy
Valdivia
(Rosemead
HS),
who advanced to the state championship match last season
after winning the Southern California championship. Also
returning are heavyweight
Brandon Doran
(Yucca
Valley HS),
who came in 5th last season and
Andrew
Holmes
(San
Jacinto HS),
a 7th place finisher at 133 pounds. Back for his
sophomore season after serving as a red-shirt last year
is
Carlos
Alaniz
(La
Mirada HS),
who placed fifth in the state championship at 133 pounds
in 2004.
The Falcons opened the season at the
Mt. San Antonio Duals and split the four matches they
competed in and took third place. After opening with a
27-21 victory over Moorpark College, Cerritos followed
that with a 40-6 victory over Rio Hondo College. Next up
were two South Coast Conference rivals, who each
defeated the Falcons, as second place Palomar (22-15)
and eventual champion Santa Ana College (27-22) each
posted wins. Next up will be the Sacramento City
Tournament, which will take place this weekend.
Against Moorpark in the opening
match, the Falcons benefited from three wins by forfeit,
but did see freshmen
Gene Choi
(North
Torrance HS)
and
Ali Kinslow
(Santa
Monica HS)
each record big wins. Choi registered a 9-4 win at 184
pounds, with Kinslow holding on for a 6-5 win after
entering the third period with a 4-0 lead. Sophomore
Matthew
Holliday
(Camp
Verde, AZ HS)
also came out with a 12-8 win at 125 pounds to help the
cause.
In the second match against Rio
Hondo, the Falcons received some solid performances to
help them in their win, most notably from freshman
Jason
Carrillo(Torrance
HS)
at 133 pounds and Kinslow at 197 pounds. Each recorded
15-0 victories, which were complimented by a pair of
wins by pin. Holliday was leading 11-2 in his 125-pound
match in the second period when he recorded his victory,
while Doran posted his pin 4:07 into his heavyweight
match, after escaping the first period by not getting
pinned himself.
In the loss to Palomar, Valdivia
continued his dominance at 125 pounds with a 16-3 win,
while Alaniz followed with a 15-7 win at 133 pounds.
Cerritos gave the Comets six points with a forfeit at
149 pounds, but did post wins at 184 pounds with
sophomore
Louis Audelo
(California
HS),
who earned a 14-3 victory, while Kinslow chipped in with
a 12-5 victory. Against the defending state champion
Dons, Cerritos forfeited at 149 pounds again, but
received wins by pin fall by freshman
Jack Porter
(Desert
Vista, AZ HS)
at 165 pounds, Audelo at 184 pounds and heavyweight
Doran. Alaniz also won big, as he recorded an 18-8
victory at 133 pounds. |
