With eight of
their nine members in position to be place winners, the
Cerritos College wrestling team finished the first day
of the California Community College Athletic Association
Wrestling State Championships at Fresno City College in
second place with 65.5 team points. Trailing only Sierra
College, who has 78 team points and all nine of
their wrestlers in position to be place winners, the
Falcons will have to overcome a huge loss in the second
round by sophomore
Jason
Carrillo (Torrance HS), the top seed from the
South at 125 pounds and state finalist from last year.
The tournament runs through Saturday, with the
Falcons looking to add to their total of 45 individual
state champions, while they have won three team state
championships. Of the eight members on the team that are
still competing, five of them are currently in
the semi-finals, a total that is only beat by Sierra,
who has seven in the semi-finals.
Regarding
Carrillo, he was defeated in the second round by Jason Moorehouse
of Skyline College, 7-6, he bounced back to record a big
win by pinning Anthony Frank of Santa Ana College in
5:13. It was a must-win for Carrillo, who only needs to
win two matches on Saturday to secure third place.
Those that made
it through the first day by winning their lone match are
two wins away from winning individual state
championships. Top-seed at 133 pounds from the South,
Paul Lyon
(Shepherd (MI) HS) needed only 55 seconds to beat Blake
Nichols of Sacramento City and now will square off
against Eddy Ngo of West Valley College in the semis. As
for freshman
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS), the top seed from the
South at 141 pounds, it took him 2:59 to pin Edgar
Mercado of Fresno City College, who placed seventh at
the state championships last year. Koehnlein will now
face Bradon McKnight of Victor Valley College in the
semi-finals. Sophomore 157-pound
David Razo
(La Quinta HS) beat two returning place winners from
last year in his two matches on Friday. As the #3 seed
from the South, Razo first pinned Jake Bridges (Shasta),
who placed seventh last year, and then recorded a 13-4
decision over Travis Wood of Sierra, who came in fourth
place at 149 pounds last year. At 197 pounds, sophomore
Al
Kinslow (Santa Monica HS) was the top seed from
the South and pinned Jimmy Gallegos of Fresno City
College in 2:15. Kinslow will now square off against
Shane Miller of Lassen College in the semis. Freshman
285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS) shut out Brandon
Hamilton of Sacramento City College, 7-0, and is now
scheduled to face defending state champion Erik Nye of
Sierra College.
As for the
wrestlers who must now compete through the
consolation bracket and can only finish as high as third
place, they include Carrillo, sophomore 165-pound
Gene Choi
(North Torrance HS), who won his first match, but was
then defeated by the top seed from the North, Zeth
St. Clair of Sierra. In his first must-win match, Choi
eliminated Blake Willard of Cuesta College, 7-6. At 174
pounds, freshman
Adam Hase
(Long Beach Millikan HS) was defeated in his first
match, but posted a huge win by pinfall over the #2 seed
from the South, Caleb Smith of Palomar College in :31
seconds. Smith, who finished fourth in the
state championships last year, had defeated Hase twice
this season, but jumped on him at the start of the match
and recorded big points for the team with his win. The
only Falcon to be eliminated in two matches was
freshman 184-pound
Mike
Mehegan (West Torrance HS), who was pinned in
both of his matches.
