In their final tournament before the Southern California
Regional Tournament, the Cerritos College wrestling team
came in fourth place at the San Francisco State
Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons, ranked #4 in
the state, tied for fourth place with Fresno City
College with 25 teams points. Sierra College won the
tournament with 40 team points, with East Los Angeles
College (34 team points) and Modesto College (29)
finishing ahead of Cerritos. The team will now close out
South Coast Conference play when they Falcons host
Victor Valley College at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Last
week, the team clinched the conference championship and
will use this match as a tune-up for the post-season.
The team had
five wrestlers reach the semi-finals at the tournament,
with one advancing to the championship match, while
three others came in third place. At 141 pounds,
freshmen
Mike
Koehnlein (Marina HS) and
Paul Lyon
(Shepherd, MI HS) advanced to the semi-finals,
while Koehnlein reached the championship match. Due to
an injury in his semi-final match, he was an injury
default. Up until the semis, Lyon pinned his first three
opponents in less that 1:20. But, he fell behind former
Falcon Juan Archuleta of Sacramento City College, 3-1.
As the match was coming to an end, Lyon made a move for
a takedown, but overcompensated and was taken down and
lost the match, 5-1. He bounced back to beat Paul Ruiz
of Fresno City College, 4-0 to take third place.
Sophomore
197-pound
Al Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS) defeated Dylan Snavely
(Sacramento City) and Cody Wilcox (Menlo College) to
advance to the semi-finals. He was then defeated, 11-5
by eventual champion Mingo Grant of Sierra College, but
rebounded to win his next two matches to finish in third
place. At 285 pounds, freshman
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS) went the long
route to come in third place. After a bye and an easy
win, Enriquez was defeated, 7-4, which sent him to the
consolation bracket. Four wins later, he was the third
place finisher, which included a 3-1 win over Tim
Guerrero (Sam Joaquin Delta), who sent him to the
consolation round the day before.
Sophomore
Gene Choi
(North Torrance HS) picked up two easy wins and a
bye at 165 pounds to get to the semi-finals. After he
was beaten by top-seeded Austin Cronan of Modesto
College, 5-3, he also lost in the consolation
semi-finals. At 157 pounds, freshman
Bronson Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) won his first three matches,
but was defeated in the semi-finals and then again in
the consolation semi-finals. |
