After spotting Victor Valley College a 9-0 lead in their
South Coast Conference wrestling match on Wednesday
night, the Cerritos College wrestling team won the final
eight weight categories and posted a 43-9 victory. The
win over the Rams secured an undefeated conference
season for the Falcons, who will now enter the Southern
California Regional Tournament on December 1 at Santa
Ana College.
Helping the team
along in their win were three forfeits by the Rams, who
did not compete at 174, 184 and 285 pounds. In addition
to the forfeits, the Falcons won two of their matches by
pinning their opponent. At 157 pounds, freshman
Bronson Gerl
(Calvary Chapel HS) was leading Roy Barrett, 6-2
in the first period before he got in position for a pin
2:40 into the match. Sophomore
Al Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS) didn’t need that much time, as
he pinned Kevin Chilton in 2:11 at 197 pounds. Once
Kinslow got Chilton down, it didn’t take him long to
record the pin.
Also turning
in dominant matches for the Falcons were freshman
Jordan
Serrano (North Torrance HS) at 165 pounds
and sophomore
Jason
Carrillo (Torrance HS) at 125 pounds.
Serrano recorded two near-falls in his 12-0 win over
Matt McCauley, while Serrano had three three-point near
falls and finished the match in the third period with a
19-2 win. Freshman
Ryan
Richards (El Segundo HS), getting the nod
at 133 pounds, had his way with Ray Bowen and scored six
takedowns en route to a 13-5 victory.
Sophomore
Tony Ruiz
(Loara HS), who ranked #4 in the state at 149
pounds, had a hard-fought match against Brandon McNight,
who’s ranked #2 in the state at 141 pounds. After
falling behind 5-1 at the end of two periods, Ruiz
seemed to come to life and picked up a quick escape
point to start the period and earned his first takedown
with 1:05 remaining. After releasing McNight, Ruiz spent
the rest of the match trying to get the tying takedown,
but ran out of time and suffered a 6-4 setback.
