Through six weights of their South Coast Conference
wrestling match against East Los Angeles College on
Wednesday night, Cerritos College found themselves
trailing, 18-6. But, after freshman
Ernie Garcia
(Santa Fe HS) defeated Richard Patini, 16-6 at
133 pounds, it started a comeback, as the team won the
final four weights, for a 24-18 victory. The Falcons,
ranked #4 in the state, will now host #1-ranked Palomar
College at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday.
Garcia was
leading 7-3 after two periods, but increased his lead
with an aggressive start to the third period, and came
away with the four teams points. After his win, freshman
141-pound
Mike
Koenhlein (Marina HS) kept the momentum
going with his pin of Ruben Warr in 6:43. At the time of
his pin, Koehnlein was leading, 9-1 in the third period.
It preceded an 18-1 win by sophomore 149-pound
Tony Ruiz
(Loara HS), that gave the Falcons a 21-18 lead,
with sophomore
David Razo
(La Quinta HS) securing the team win with his 7-4
victory over Adrian Gonzales at 157 pounds.
Cerritos opened
the match by losing the first three weights, and trailed
11-0 before sophomore 197-pound
Al Kinslow
(Santa Monica HS) won the first of two straight
matches with his 9-5 decision. Freshman 285-pound
Juan
Enriquez (John Glenn HS) followed with a
solid 7-0 win over Julian Capucchi. A loss at 125 pounds
put the team down, 16-8 before they finished off by
winning the final four matches.
